Tofu Tuesday: Semi Permanent swag

I’ve had a creative supercharge after 2 days at Semi Permanent, a creative conference here in Auckland. with 20 speakers over 2 days, it certainly gave my brain a work out. It’s been a good few years since my last Semi Permanent, I started attending  in 2004 when I was a bright-eyed third-year graphic design student. Now that I’m a freelancer and own my own business, the conference has a different meaning to me. The speakers this year included various entrepreneurs, creative directors, an architect, a poet, UX designers, social media and business people. I was a little gutted there were any illustrators, photographers or typographers represented as these are things that are close to my heart. There were 2 speakers that had food backgrounds though which pleased me. This year felt much more business, technology and philosophy orientated. While I am a business owner, I find business conversations pretty boring. My favourite speaker would be Sam Bompas of Bompas & Parr fame. If you love food with a healthy dose of wonder and magic, I suggest you look them …

Semi-Permanent 2012

A decade ago, the year Semi-Permenent set up a chapter in Auckland, I was a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, first-year design student. I had just started going out with The Koala and when we heard about a new, fledgling design conference we purchased our precious tickets. For a student, even the concession ticket was a lot of money. The Koala and I attended the very first NZ Semi-Permanent event at the Bruce Mason Theatre in Takapuna and we were blown away by the world-famous calibre of creative speakers. Since then, I’ve barely missed an event. I think I’ve missed two. One because we were saving our pennies for our wedding and another time we were out of town. Semi-Permenent took a break from our shores last year, but this year they are back and on in just a few weeks! I won’t be in Auckland so I won’t be attending this year. But if you are around, you should check it out. The two day event runs on 18 and 19 May 2012 at the ASB Theatre at …

Semi-Permanent and We Can Create

For the past 8 years, Semi-Permanent has been THE design conference to go to if you live in Auckland. Originating from Australia, it’s been going strong since I was a first year design student all those years ago and I’ve been to so many I’ve lost count. I know I’ve missed at least one but it was with a very reluctant, heavy heart. SP began as a one day event of creative industry speakers from around the world, but now it’s ballooned into a two day event with a myriad of side events (art exhibitions, after parties, subtle mobs) running alongside the conference. It’s a super inspiring event and one that no creative should miss. I swear I come home super charged and ready to explode with things to explore/make/research. This year, the New Zealand organisers of SP, The Church have branched off from SP to do their own conference called We Can Create. The two design conferences are 2 weeks apart. SP is 12-13 August and WCC is 26-27 August. With limited WCC earlybird …
