Collecting teaspoons

The Koala and I are proud owners of decent amount of cutlery, thanks to generous wedding gifts. But like socks, teaspoons have a habit of being abducted, MIA or vanishing into thin air. I suspect there is a parallel universe wasteland of mismatched socks and whole armies of mismatched teaspoons.

Our local supermarket giant has a new stamp collecting campaign.Collect 30 stamps to receive a significant discount on cutlery.

To receive a 4 piece teaspoon set, you need to collect 30 stamps and then the set is yours for $1.99. To get 30 stamps you must spend a minimum of $600. Parting with $602 will buy you 4 teaspoons. I feel that if I had already spent $600 a $2 gift wouldn’t be out of line, though the RRP of these teaspoons is a cool $30.

Thoughts?

  1. My parents are also like this. I think they did it with the knives or glasses at countdown haha. Mom would come out of the grocery asking “How many more stamps do we need to complete it?” My sis and I would then contribute in the little pool of stamps haha.

  2. I can see why they want to run these promotions. I guess they only give you a discount rather than free cutlery so people like me just don’t bother collecting stamps, and they make even more money. This doesn’t bother me quite so much as the fuel discounts, where people who take public transport are basically subsidising people who drive. I mean, it’s not like the supermarket is going to be giving money away for free. All the prices must go up across the board, so they can afford to run promotions.

  3. I was never in to those thats why I dont use flybuys as well. I think its the thrill of collecting the stamps rather than anything else. The only thing I collect though are those coffee stamps and bento boxes, 10 of them you get one free 🙂

  4. It does sound like a little nickle and diming. My MIL gave us a cutlery set for 8 years ago that came with 16 teaspoons! I guess they anticipated that half will go AWOL!

  5. this stamp collection thing is an addiction. and my mum has it!

everytime there’s a new give-away she starts going around asking for receipts from everyone just so she can get another plate or pot (neither of which we need!)
