When we were young, we would buy all the girly teen magazines and take personality quizzes with more seriousness than end of year exams. I’m not sure the psychology behind taking online quizzes (as an adult) but it’s a little bit of fun.
I saw this career quiz posted on a designer friend’s Facebook page. Going by the comments under his post, I thought I would get designer for sure. For sure! I mean, what have I been doing for the past 10++ years?
You’re extremely creative, profoundly imaginative, and an original thinker. You see something in your head, and your brain has a way of figuring out how it should come into existence. You see something in the world, and you already know how to improve it tenfold. You have the power to affect people’s emotions and the ability to truly change how people perceive things.
I’ve always considered myself lucky because I knew I wanted. I was 15 when I realised I wanted a career in design. I’m 30 now, meaning I have been on this path for half my life. Through my teenage years, I did some work shadowing and experience in graphic design, took design and art subjects at school which this led to a full scholarship and acceptance to the design programme at AUT. Since graduating I have been working full time in print and freelancing on the side ever since.
I’m a designer.
Well, I didn’t get designer in the quiz.
I got chef.
You’re naturally creative, imaginative, and you can instantly come up with new ideas in your head. More than anything you want to create something beautiful and enjoyable that will satisfy and make people happy. You have an uncanny ability to make masterpieces out of sheer nothingness.
To be fair, the descriptions are similar and could even be interchangeable. A designer also has to make their client happy and a chef also can affect people’s emotions. I guess that is why there are so many foodie designers? While I love cooking and food, I don’t think I’m about to retrain as a chef.
I know this is just a silly quiz but it got me thinking. I’m not sure exactly what I want but I think it’s a step closer to food, while not taking my foot off graphic design either. I love design. I love food. Can’t I do both? Universe do you hear me? Can you send something my way?
