A bowl of yum
For those who don’t know what a sushi bowl is, it’s just a bunch of chopped sushi and salad ingredients served on a bowl of rice. You have a mouthful of this, a mouthful of that and in the end, it pretty much tastes like sushi in your mouth.
This recipe is great for either lunch and dinner. I should know, I’ve eaten this for lunch and dinner this week.

Sealord recently won the Supreme Award at the New Zealand Food Awards for their Manuka Hot Smoked Salmon. The flavours in their Manuka Hot Smoked Salmon range: Natural, Peri Peri (bird’s eye chili) and Tuscan.
I usually buy unflavoured smoked salmon. I find it to be more versatile and I enjoy adding my own flavourings to dishes. What I really liked about Sealord Manuka Hot Smoked Salmon Natural was it has only 3 ingredients: Salmon, salt and sugar. Just those ingredients and smoke I guess.
Furikake is a Japanese seasoning that is sprinkled on top of rice. A mix of seaweed, dried fish, sesame, salt, sugar and MSG, it adds an umami hit to any rice dish. Entirely optional in this recipe but I feel like it really polishes off the dish, plus the seaweed gives it that classic rolled sushi flavour.
Smoked Salmon Sushi Bowl
- 50-100 grams (2-4 oz) hot smoked salmon
- A handful of edamame beans
- 1/2 cup grated carrot
- 1/2 an avocado, sliced
- 1 serving of cooked rice
- A soft boiled egg, halved
- 1/2 teaspoon wasabi
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
- Garnish: black sesame seeds, sliced spring onion, coriander, furikaki, soy sauce
- Scoop the cooked rice into a bowl, arrange the smoked salmon, edamame, carrot, avocado, and boiled egg on top.
- Mix the wasabi with the mayonnaise until smooth. Add to the middle of the bowl and top with garnishes. Drizzle with soy sauce if you like. Enjoy!
Other items you could add: cucumber, tofu, pickled ginger, surimi, cooked prawns, cherry tomatoes, radish.

A note about the bunnies
The Koala and I found these adorable Sylvanian Families rabbits in a toy store in Osaka, Japan. We visited a few toy stores in Japan. We were like, um…overgrown kids in a toy store.
The markings on these reminded us a little of Tofu and their Japanese costumes were way too cute, so we brought them home with us. I thought they might enjoy my sushi bowls too.
As a kid, I adored Sylvanian Families but they were expensive and I never owned any. I love being a grown up, you can eat salmon sushi bowls for lunch AND dinner and buy things like Sylvanian Families.
Edit: I’ve since learned that this bowl is similar to a chirashi.
