Tofu Tuesday: Pet pack

A lot of rabbits live outside in a hutch, even in winter. They survive. However, I have no doubt that if they had the choice, they would prefer to live inside and snuggle up with a warm pet pack (or other bunnies). This is the first winter we have tried a warming pad for Tofu. It’s just a bag of orange gel that I microwave for a few minutes until it is warm, then it goes into a fleecy pouch with a couple of sheets of reflective stuff to keep the warmth in. As Tofu is gets older (almost 8 years) he seems to feel the cold more. Some mornings this winter, he would rather stay indoors than to roam free in the backyard. I sometimes find Tofu with his fluffy bum pressed against his warm pet pack. He grooms the pet pack like it might be his friend. Tofu has also been coming into our room at night. He hops around my side of the bed until I wake up and scoop him up and he …

Tofu Tuesday: Winter sun

I caught Tofu the bunny sitting in the coldest, wettest part of our garden. You know, the area that gets no sun in the winter. …So I scooped him up and put him the sunniest, driest part of our garden. He promptly aimed his butt at the sun and stretched out. I think he liked it. Click here to see more editions of Tofu Tuesday.

Tofu Tuesday: Rank Ass Leaf

I think every pet owner has caught their pet eating something gross. As adorable and as well fed as they are, pets just can’t help but eat weird shit they find. If you know anything about rabbits, then you might know that rabbits eat poop. Yes, literally. As sweet as bunny kisses are, you must remember. They eat poop. I once caught Tofu the bunny under our lemon tree eating a rotten lemon. The lemon old, squishy and covered in ants. Tofu had this look of pure bliss on his face and pure disappointment when I took the lemon from him. Other things we catch Tofu eating are the rank ass leaves in the back yard. The ranker, the better. I walk to the markets twice a week to select the brightest, greenest greens for Tofu the bunny. Then he goes into our backyard and selects the oldest, yuckiest brown leaves for himself. Makes sense. Here he is munching on one such leaf. I let him finish the leaf rather than taking it from him. It’s …

Tofu Tuesday: Winter palm sunset

Winter is coming. Tofu didn’t want to go outside yesterday morning. Typical Monday.  I scooped him up and placed him by the back door to check out the backyard. He said a big, “NOPE!” and hopped back to his room. But the weather turned out to be glorious so I popped off home at lunch and let him outdoors. By then the world was warm (hot even) and he was keen. I also took the opportunity to hang up a load of washing and throw another load in. You gotta use every ounce of sunshine you can get. By the time I get home from work at 5.15pm each day, the sun has already dropped below the horizon. Not ideal for photography but Tofu the bunny assured me it could work if I lifted him up towards the dying light.  He was right. Of course. I like how the palm trees in the background suggest we are somewhere much warmer. Click here to see more editions of Tofu Tuesday.

Tofu Tuesday: Moustache Mug

Unlike some whimsical twee hipsters, Tofu the bunny was born with his hipster mo. A little while ago, when I heard that Moustache Milk & Cookie but might be facing closure, I was quick to put my money where my heart/mouth/stomach is and pledge to fund their latest venture. Deanna, the owner of Moustache Milk & Cookie Bar has her very own WordPress blog which you can check out over here. Her blog is incredibly sincere and her story is nothing short of amazing. Not only did I get to save a business I love dearly, but I also got a pledge reward of a moustache mug. I hate to say that I love inanimate objects, but I love this mug. It is ceramic with moustaches printed on both sides and a silicone top. Great for guzzling coffee at my desk. Also looks good with similarly-hued moustachioed rabbits. Kozik Labbit painted by The Koala, wearing dollar store stick on moustache. Tofu the bunny wearing model’s own moustache. Mug from Moustache Milk & Cookie Bar. Click here to see …

Tofu Tuesday: Off to the vet again today

Hope everyone had a good Easter. Tofu might have found Easter a bit too stressful I’m afraid. The Koala found an abscess on Tofu’s chin on Saturday. It looks like his dewlap is enlarged, possibly filled with fluid? We called the vet straightway but it being Easter they were fully booked and couldn’t see until they open again on Tuesday (today). They were happy that since he is eating and pooping that he can wait a few days. Tofu can’t seem to lie down, but is eating. I’ll be taking him to the vet this morning. Hope it’s just a drain and nothing more serious. Tofu had full geriatric tests at the end of February. This included dental, bloods and x-rays, so whatever is happening is happening quick. Please keep the little fellow in your thoughts today. Post Vet Visit Update: Just got back from the vet. Best case scenario. The swelling has gone down completely and after a good feel and a squeeze, Tofu has been diagnosed with trauma to the skin. Just a scratch. The skin is thickened but …

Tofu Tuesday: I am not a toy

Easter is an odd time for a non-religious rabbit enthusiast. On one hand, there are bunny-themed displays everywhere (yay!) and on the other my heart breaks because many families hop off to the pet store to get themselves their very own Easter bunny for the holidays. In a few months time, when those Easter bunnies are no longer a novelty or hit puberty (and start humping), or become too big or feisty for small children to handle, the Easter bunnies are abandoned, neglected or dumped. Animal shelters are full of rabbits after Easter. It happens every year. A rabbit is a commitment, not a disposable party decoration to be forgotten once the season is over. If you’re only looking for something to decorate your holiday, please consider a soft toy rabbit or chocolate rabbit instead. Please inform your friends and family if they are thinking of getting an Easter bunny. Click here to see more editions of Tofu Tuesday.

Tofu Tuesday: Destroyer of boxes

It came to my attention last week that some bunnies are not as thorough as Tofu when it comes to dealing with cardboard boxes. I’d like to present to you a box that Tofu has been working on. Top photo shows “the good side” and then the bottom photo is the “no holds barred side”. As you can see, Tofu is quite talented at decommissioning a cardboard box. First he starts by nibbling the corners, then if he can get purchase, he tears off bigs strips from the sides. Finally, he goes in for the kill by nibbling the folds until the wall is breached. All this is usually done in the still of the night. The box lives under our bed. When you’re trying to sleep, torn cardboard is the noisiest thing in the world.

Tofu Tuesday: Juice Pulp

I made a juice the other day and had just emptied the juice pulp into our worm farm when suddenly a rabbit stopped me in my tracks. He demanded that I hand over the juice pulp container, which I did. He proceeded to investigate. Too late buddy, that was worm food. Click here to see more editions of Tofu Tuesday.
