Tofu Tuesday: Pet pack

A lot of rabbits live outside in a hutch, even in winter. They survive. However, I have no doubt that if they had the choice, they would prefer to live inside and snuggle up with a warm pet pack (or other bunnies). This is the first winter we have tried a warming pad for Tofu. It’s just a bag of orange gel that I microwave for a few minutes until it is warm, then it goes into a fleecy pouch with a couple of sheets of reflective stuff to keep the warmth in. As Tofu is gets older (almost 8 years) he seems to feel the cold more. Some mornings this winter, he would rather stay indoors than to roam free in the backyard. I sometimes find Tofu with his fluffy bum pressed against his warm pet pack. He grooms the pet pack like it might be his friend. tofu-pet-pack Tofu has also been coming into our room at night. He hops around my side of the bed until I wake up and scoop him up and he stays on the bed until morning.

  1. tofu sounds so sweet. every winter i think my cat is this great snuggly kitty always cuddling with me at bedtime… then summer comes and he sleeps on the floor, far far away from my body heat. that’s when i remember that he just uses me for my warmth. 😦

    • So true. Cats are users. Our neighbour’s cat came over yesterday and slept on our furry blanket. When I talked to her she gave me this icy glare which said, “What do you want? Leave me and my blanket alone, I’m catching up on some naps here”.

  2. Spunkie used to press her bunny butt against the cast iron heater in the winter. Dustie liked to sit in the sun.
The heating pad is a great idea, just make sure he can’t chew through the fabric. They also make them out of barley or other beans…maybe better for bunnies.

    • That’s a great idea. Tofu hasn’t tried to bite the pack…yet, but I do worry that it is only a matter of time. With the wheat bag though, I worry that he will find it too delicious. He LOVES bread. One time he stole a bun out of my handbag.

This is so adorable… I have a warm pack too, but mine is filled with wheat rather than orange gel. Does Tofu ever poop around the house/in your bed? I’ve only ever had cats and dogs so I really have no idea!

    • I’m not going to lie, we have accidents. But rabbit poop is much less offensive than dot and cat poop. I’ll have to look for a wheat bag. That’s a great idea.
