One week later

We were in Bangkok last week when we found out Christchurch had been hit by a major earthquake. My sister text me and we immediately tried texting my husband’s family. Feeling so helpless so far away, we went online and read with horror of what was unfolding down there. Lyttelton – where my inlaws live was hit hard. Our wedding reception venue, The Cave had been obliterated. We didn’t get a text reply from our family so we tried calling from Bangkok. Success. They were ok. All of them. Staying with other family at their house near the airport. It’s been a week now since the earthquake. My thoughts go out to those with friends or family still missing. Thanks to all the support we’ve had from our overseas friends. It’s crazy with media these days how the world is linked by a few strands. Many of you across the globe knew about the earthquake the moment the rest New Zealand found out and before we knew anything about it. It feels like a small …

Pigs: What this year will bring

From Moonslipper.com. The Pig The Pig is an innocent, sweet and lovable personality. They can also be quite melancholy and over-sensitive. The Pig loves the company of others, and adores parties, gossip and chit chat. They are highly intelligent, but prefer to keep this side of their nature under wraps. The Pig does not care that much for money, but is one of the Chinese zodiac signs that is very lucky. Forecast for 2011 The Pig loves to have fun and socialize with family and friends and on this front, the Year of the Rabbit will not disappoint him! He made not have been the life of the party recently, but in 2011 his social network will greatly increase with April, May, July and October being the most enjoyable months. Single Pigs could very well meet a romantic partner through a friend or at a family gathering. The Pig parties hard and works hard and in the Year of the Rabbit he will be bringing in the rewards for all his hard work. For any …

Gong hei faht choy!

Happy Chinese New Year readers! Can you guess what year it is this year in the Chinese lunar calendar? Come on, just one guess?! 2011 is the year of the rabbit! Ahuh! After the hectic year that was the tiger, the year of the rabbit is supposed to bring peace. This is a year where we might self indulge a bit, so keep it in mind (and in check). A bit of self indulgence is good, but not too much or you will become a sick, fat little rabbit. This year trickle by at a leisurely pace. Pursue your hobbies – gentler ones if possible. Gardening, reading, painting, playing music etc. If going on a vacation, make it a relaxing holiday, rather than an adventure holiday. Readers, get ready for a slower pace. Are you ready? I know I am. N.B. Photos of tiger cub and rabbit are from 2006 at the Sanya Greatest World of Love in Sanya, a city in South China’s Hainan where tiger cubs and rabbits became friends. Don’t believe me? Look …

Love Your Mountain Day – Pics

I made it to Love Your Mountain Day a couple of weekends ago. It was a sweltering summer day, not really idea for a mountain ascent. I wanted to go, but I didn’t fancy being a sweaty mess so I left it a little later in the day hoping it would cool down in the afternoon. It didn’t. It took about 2 hours to visit Government House, Eden Garden and the mountain itself including the walk to/from my house. All were free entry and there were guided tours for those that were interested. Government House The tour at Government House was led by a gardener. It was quite cool to listen to someone so knowledgeable and passionate about plants. When someone asked what species of grass it was, I thought it was a joke, but the gardener knew the answer in a heartbeat. This is the secondary residence of our Governor General. A big old Redwood Sequoia and 2 Nikau Palms. The lawns were really beautiful and I thought about our brown, sad looking lawn …

Happy 4th birthday City Farmers’ Market!

Today marks 4 years of the City Farmers’ Market in Auckland city behind Britomart. It’s one of the the closest farmers market to me and easy to get to by walking, bus or train. It’s the last one before Christmas, so if you’re thinking about foodie gifts or buying good ingredients and products to feed the hungry masses, come to City Farmers’ Market. I usually come home with some fresh vegies, some fancy bread, smoked fish and seedlings to add to my tiny vegetable garden. On today from 8.30am until 12.30pm. Visit their website for more details.

Cinzah’s first solo show and afterparty

Photos from Cinzah’s show on last Friday at Rebel Yell Gallery and afterparty at Khuja Lounge. I love art shows and arty afterparties. Fun! Mural painted on Rebel Yell wall. Cinzah and fans. Simon (Cracked Ink) drawing at the Khuja afterparty. Cracked Ink goes bang. Gene drawing Jeff the Maori. Jeff the Maori. Doodle wall. They let riffraff like me draw! I did some bunnies and conjoined critters. Live art on stage. Liam (City King). Nice work guys!

Cinzah’s first solo show!

We’re going to the opening of Cinzah Merken’s first solo show tonight. He’s called it Big City Island Kids and it’s on at Rebel Yell Gallery in La Gonda Arcade at 203 K Rd, Auckland. From 6pm until 9pm with an afterparty with live art at Khuja afterwards. Cinzah also paints as Seekayem. Cinzah’s work is a kooky combination of illustration, graffiti and low brow art. His wall-eyed, bung eyed smiling characters will charm the pants off you, so wear a belt. Check it out! (click image for larger view)

Love Your Mountain

I have my very own volcano on my doorstep. It is called Mt Eden or Maungawhau and it takes me 40 minutes return to walk from my house, to the base of the mountain, up to the top of the mountain and back. Not long at all. Yep, my little life would be over in a heartbeat if it were to erupt. Having a volcano in the ‘hood means that our soil is rich and the area really flourishes with green goodness. So let’s celebrate this sleeping giant! This Sunday is Love Your Mountain Day 2010. There will be guided walks and free entry into Eden Garden and Government House grounds. Sunday, December 12, from 10am to 4pm. In past years there have been origami cranes and wishes strung up to a big tree. I think they might be able to use my origami crane skills. After folding 1000 cranes for our wedding, I like to think I’m somewhat an expert at folding. More info here. p.s. I love you.

Stuff for the season

Stuff. Who needs it? As we grow into real grownups we realise we have so much stuff. Our houses are filled with stuff. In the last few years, I’ve really enjoyed giving people I love experience presents. Dinners, circus tickets, subscriptions, stuff like that. It makes it one less awkward thing you can’t throw away and memories of a fun experience is worth much more. I love giving gifts. There is something really satisfactory (is that selfish?) in giving someone something you know they will love. I’ve bought 1 thing for a Christmas present so far this year and I’m happy to leave it at that. The present is for our nephew Lucas who is 1 and a half years old and it’s a gift that should grow with him for years to come. It’s not a toy, I like to think of it as functional, educational art. I better not say any more in case he is a genius literate baby and reads his auntie’s blog. Avoid the malls and gift experiences to enrich …

First Thursday – review

Oops, my first First Thursday was a bit of a fail. There are 5 venues to the event and I only got to one of them. We checked out the stalls in St Kevin’s Arcade, had a beer at Alleluja Cafe, had dinner across the road at the food court and then it was 9pm and First Thursdays was over. Next time, dinner at home before we go and beer only if it’s on “the course”. Here are a few photos from what little I did see. Illustrated Jewellery by Hunter Gatherer. Good books. Ferrit stall. Sweet, sewn goods. The fabric candle and flowers on the left corner is a little shrine to the Pike River miners. Live music. St Kevin’s Arcade. Moon Gazing Rabbit with Sake Bowls by JM. St Kevin’s Arcarde from the comfort of my beer at Allelujah Cafe. Knitted stuff. Yes! Woolen glasses! Bird in a Bunny Suit. Earrings for a foodie.

Scenes from Taste of Auckland

Some scenes from Taste of Auckland festival last night. I went to Taste of Auckland with my friends C and A and we bumped into my sister Joey, her boyfriend D and their friend there. You’ll have to wait until tomorrow’s post to see the food porn. Ha! The session times this year are 4 hours each. There is a lot of stuff to try and cram in that time even if you don’t do any of the classes or shows. We didn’t see everything, but more than 4 hours would have been too tiring. The Victoria Park location this year is a great bonus. Victoria Park is such a central location and while it’s no necessarily closer to my house than last year’s location, it’s a lot easier to get to and from. For those are interested, I spent about $54 on 4 dishes, 1 beer, 1 plum sake sake and 1 caipirinha cocktail and my earlybird ticket was $15. Welcome to Auckland’s Big Little City. Me and C being welcoming. Are you convinced? Is this …

The time to Taste is upon us.

I have been eagerly waiting since August for this day. Well, maybe even longer than that, but that’s when I bought my ticket. This evening, my friends A and C and I will be joining a bunch of food enthusiasts in Victoria Park, Auckland central for Taste of Auckland. There will be food products and booze to sample and buy and we’ll be sampling as many dishes as we please from a range of Auckland’s most prestigious restaurants. I’m not much of a fine diner, so it’s unlikely that I’d get to try these dishes in my day to day food adventures. Excitement!!! The dishes I have my eye on (in order of preference): Euro: Simon Gault Alaskan King crab & prawn in jalapeno crème fraiche sauce topped with tuna wafer – 10 Crowns Toto: Carpaccio di Polipo – Octopus carpaccio with asparagus, fennel, citrus salad & macadamia crumble – 8 Crowns Clooney: Gameford Lodge King Cole Duck Breast, pickled apple, maple & mustard – 12 Crowns Dine by Peter Gordon: Pan-seared scallops with pickled …

Taste of Auckland

Taste of Auckland is a celebration of Auckland’s top restaurants and local food and wine. This year’s event will be held in Victoria Park, in the city centre from 18 – 21 November. Taste of Auckland is great for eaters like me that would love to eat at fine dining restaurants but don’t have the budget for it. Instead of paying $50 for a meal at Auckland’s top restaurants, try a $10 sample of their top dishes instead. There are also many gourmet food products. I tried Zest ice cream here for the first time. I’m a devoted fan now. I also tried Paraiso Lychee Liqueur for the first time at Taste last year. That stuff is magic. One thing I love about food expos is that you can ask questions to the presenters and the sellers and they all know a lot about their product and can give you advice. You just can’t do that down at your local supermarket chain. The format is a little different this year with set session times instead …
