Update on Tofu

For those that do not follow Bunny Eats Design on Facebook, here is an update on our heart-wrenching week. On Monday, we took Tofu to the vet. He stayed a few days while they ran tests. X-rays showed a marble-sized bladder stone which must be removed via surgery. The stone would be causing him pain and must be removed as soon as possible. Infection Because he also has a bladder infection, the infection must be cleared before they can operate. As you can imagine, infections and surgery are not friends.  Weight loss While Tofu has always been a little overweight, he has lost 200 grams since the last time he was weight. For a rabbit, that’s quite a large weight loss.  Glaucoma The vet was also concerned about one of his eyes. While Tofu already has cataracts in both eyes and cannot see, he may be developing glaucoma in his left eye. If this happens, the eye must be removed. This will be further costs further down the track. Decisions The tests, x-rays, surgery, meds …

Tofu Tuesday: Another day in the grass

Tofu hasn’t been well over the last few days. He was great for a few months but over the last weekend he became messy in the undercarriage and looked very uncomfortable. In September he had his bladder flushed and a course of meds. A bottom shaved helped keep things in check too. Since then, things have looked pretty good until the end of last week. Not only had we switched to the vet recommended pellets but we’ve cut portions severely over the last 5 months. In the last week or so he has eaten only a handful of pellets as we’re trying to encourage hay and fresh greens instead. He will not eat hay if  a full pellet bowl awaits him. His appetite has been pretty normal and he has been drinking water. He still enjoys around 10 hours a day roaming free in the backyard and snuggles with us in the evenings (and some mornings). On Sunday, he even jumped up onto the couch for a snuggle which is quite a feat for a sick, blind …

Tofu Tuesday: Geriatric status

Tofu the rabbit has been unwell and yesterday afternoon we took him to Lynfield Vets  who are the best bunny vets in Auckland. He has spent the night at the animal hospital. Tomorrow they will run a whole series of tests on him including x-rays, eye flush and what they call “Full Geriatric Testing”. I have never thought of Tofu as a geriatric. Not even once. He was already miffed when the vet mentioned that he was overweight, he probably won’t handle his new geriatric labelling well. Let’s face it, we have a double cataract, overweight, geriatric bunny but we love him to bits. We will be collecting him tomorrow afternoon and fingers crossed that he is OK and that his health concerns are identified and come with straightforward treatment. I hate to think what we will do if he isn’t OK. This bill alone is more than a week’s wages, but what else can you do? Please keep little Tof in your thoughts today. No new photo for today’s post but here are a …

Tofu Tuesday: Bunny bath time and Monocle Morph

Rabbits are very clean animals and spend a huge amount of time grooming. But from time to time they can get a bit messy underneath due to diet and/or weather. Usually, we trim away offending dirty fluff and dreads. Bunny bath time Last Thursday we gave Tofu his first bath ever. It wasn’t nearly as traumatic as we thought it would be, but it was a 2 person job. One to hold him firmly and dip his bottom into the sink and the other to shampoo and rinse. That was pretty successful and we got all the brown bits out. But then come Friday evening, Tofu was wet all underneath which is unusual for him and very uncomfortable. He was eating as usual and running around the backyard quite happily but his fur was wet, smelly and dreaded and the skin inflamed. Local vet visit We usually take Tofu to a miracle worker of a vet which is quite a long drive away, but this didn’t seem to be a life or death situation, so we …
