Big Bennie with ham (off the bone)
I stayed in Sumner, Christchurch for 3 nights before our wedding last year and I had breakfast at Tart, 3 times in a row. There are a few other places to eat in Sumner, but we didn’t bother to try another cafe because Tart was divine.
The interior is contemporary, fresh, bright and clean with plenty of tables outside. Someone has obviously taken care to decorate this place with just the right stylings.
I’m a huge fan of ham so when I saw that beautiful hindquarter inside the glass cabinet, I was already drooling. Lucky for me, the eggs bennie comes with ham off the bone. I also ordered an OJ and a flat white. The flat white was really good. The OJ was huge and pulpy. Just how I like it. You really get the feeling that you are being nourished when you eat from here. The ingredients are top notch. My poached eggs were perfectly runny and had bright orange yolks and my friend who ordered the same was very happy too.
The second breakfast we had at Tart I ordered the salmon frittata which was divine. It had sweetcorn in it which was a bit different. I love sweetcorn but my fellow diners C and A aren’t fans, so I didn’t have to share. A had the spanakopita which she pronounced delicious. She liked it so much, she ate another one the following day. After A returned to Auckland, she text me in the following days to see if I would bring Tart’s spanakopita back with me to Auckland. Though it was tempting, I thought that by the time I got it back across the country to her, it would be a bit tired (or eaten) and wouldn’t do it justice. C ordered the venison pie for her breakfast. I suppose that living Japan (where there is a serious lack of pies), meant that she couldn’t pass up a chance for a pie.
My third and final trip to Tart I brought my brand, spanking new husband. I had be raving about Tart all week and he really had to try it before we headed back to Auckland. This time we both ordered the big bennie but I added extra ham and my husband added sausages and bacon. Yum!!!!
The service and attitude of the staff are fantastic here and nothing is ever any trouble.
I look forward to the next week when we are in Christchurch, hopefull we have time to eat at Tart again. If I could fold Tart up and pop it in my bag, I would take it back to Auckland with me. I have never had this kind of quality food + coffee + service combo in any Auckland cafe. Tart is worth moving to Sumner for. Ahuh!
