Friday Favourites: Meat Feast

Vegetarians, look away now. My favourite carnivorous experience in Auckland city has got to be Wildfire Churascaria. The style of eating is Churrasco, Brazilian BBQ. The idea is that various cuts of meat are brought to your table and you have a stop/go toggle to indicate if you are ready to feast or prefer a break. Here’s a review of my experience from last October: Despite the below average reviews from a local restaurant review website, we went to Wildfire night for dinner. We had a great group of carnivores and we opted for the early session (10 clams cheaper). The Koala and I arrived a little late (parking woes) and bread and dips were already at the table. We were all briefed on not filling up on bread and vege so we didn’t tear into them like crazy monkeys. The bread I did have was really hard so I could only eat 1 piece anyway. That’s fine. I wasn’t here for the bread. We ordered our drinks and the first meat – the smoked salmon – …

Friday Favourites: Local weekday treat

Wanted: Local. Good food. Nice surroundings. Sun. Beer. Eden Cloak Room is pretty close to home and work and I have heard good things about them. We drive or walk past here very often when doing other Mt Eden things and it looks like a great time. I’ve been wanting to come here for aaaages, but they are usually super busy and we don’t like crowded places with limited seating. An early weekday lunch was the perfect solution. We arrived just before noon and were the first to order lunch. I ordered the fish and chips and The Koala got the the lamb burger. Solid, kiwi fare. We both had Radlers to accompany our meals. A perfectly summery concoction. We had our pick our seats so we picked an outside table. The food arrived in good time and it was presented beautifully. I like how even though my fish and chips come on a plate, there is a sheet of newspaper for added presentation. Fish and chips and newspaper just looks right. The minted mashed peas …

Friday Favourites: Dai Jahp Hai

Some of the most cherished meals are seasonal. There is something about eating a dish at the same time (and sometimes with the same folks) every year that makes it special. Perhaps it’s more delicious knowing that if you miss out this year, then you must wait a whole year for your next chance? What if you are in a different country during that special season? 13 years ago, we visited Hong Kong in Autumn and I still think of an amazing feast we had. Steamed (or was it boiled?) crabs and served at the family table over disposable tablecloths. A sweet, vinegar based dipping sauce on offer and it’s pretty much just a free for all. There are various spoons, scissors and implements and everyone has a great time working for their edible prize. In Western cuisine, crab is prized for it’s meat. The large grapple factor (big effort for minimal meat) deters many Westerners from eating crab. In Hong Kong, it’s not the meat that is prized, but the roe. Male crabs have more …

Friday Favourites: Ribs

For some crazy ass reason, ribs aren’t popular around these parts. For my fill of Flintstone style ribs, I always go to Lonestar. Lonestar restaurants have an American cowboy theme in decor and menu. They are consistent in their food and service and have 21 restaurants in New Zealand. I’ve been to 3 of their restaurants and found them to be very similar. Their meals are not cheap, but they are massive, so it is value for money. I do wonder if their portions are Americanised portions? I can comfortably eat 6 ribs for dinner including a bit of the sides that they come with. Too bad their smallest main order of ribs is 9 ribs. I’ve tried a few other things on their menu. Not recommended. Just come to Lonestar for the ribs. You will not be disappointed. If you order something else from their menu and you don’t like it, it’s your own damn fault. BAKED REDNECK RIBS A massive serving of nine or twelve pork ribs piled high, blanched in honey & …

Friday Favourites: Fish Burger

An amazing meal isn’t just about the food. What you did that day, the company you keep, surroundings and other stuff can all affect your enjoyment of a meal. After a lovely day at the Muriwai last summer, I got to eat this beast for a late lunch. A big piece of deep fried fish, plenty of salad bits and tons of mayo/tartar. It was at the fish and chip shop attached to the store on the way out of Muriwai. I don’t know the name of it, but I’m sure you’ll find it. It still looks good half way through. What’s a kiwi day at the beach without some fish and chips?

Friday Favourites: Sumner Ham

Big Bennie with ham (off the bone) I stayed in Sumner, Christchurch for 3 nights before our wedding last year and I had breakfast at Tart, 3 times in a row. There are a few other places to eat in Sumner, but we didn’t bother to try another cafe because Tart was divine. The interior is contemporary, fresh, bright and clean with plenty of tables outside. Someone has obviously taken care to decorate this place with just the right stylings. I’m a huge fan of ham so when I saw that beautiful hindquarter inside the glass cabinet, I was already drooling. Lucky for me, the eggs bennie comes with ham off the bone. I also ordered an OJ and a flat white. The flat white was really good. The OJ was huge and pulpy. Just how I like it. You really get the feeling that you are being nourished when you eat from here. The ingredients are top notch. My poached eggs were perfectly runny and had bright orange yolks and my friend who ordered …

Friday Favourites: Ham roll

Let the world know that I have a special place in my heart for ham on the bone. Maybe it’s the excess it represents. You can’t get a small ham on the bone. It’s usually enough to feed a party. Maybe it’s the sweet glaze on that fatty exterior. Maybe it’s that savoury, flavourful meat that’s tender and can be eaten hot or cold. Gee, just writing about it makes me salivate. In any case, I always make it a point to eat ham outside of Christmas. I once met a random guy outside a bar. He was a friend of a friend of a friend. He said that he recognised me from a party at a bar years ago. He remembered that this party had ham. It was my 22nd birthday and the ham was a gift from my parents. We had an art exhibition at a bar and served up ham rolls to all that came. What a wonderful thing to be remembered for. Here lies Bunny.Eats.Design. She partied with Ham. Anyway, enough hamming …

Friday Favourites: The best seafood buffet

SBF Brasserie has the very best seafood buffet in Auckland and reserved for special occasions in my family. Fresh oysters, salmon sashimi, crab and hot smoked salmon are my personal highlights and I’ll happily have 2 helpings of seafood. Crab isn’t popular in New Zealand for some reason – perhaps the high grapple factor puts people off – so it’s nice to see it offered here. The hot food selection is good too but I didn’t need more than 1 plate of it. Service is great, water top ups a plenty and plates are cleared regularly. The golden kiwi and pavlova flavoured icecream was interesting and yummy. The chocolate fountain is a fun (though messy) for adults and kids. My only complaint are the booths. I’m not a large person and found it hard to get in and out of the booth seats. Not much space between seat and table. The cushions while pretty only get in the way and with people on on either me, it was a hassle to get out as I had …

Friday Favourites: Nachos

Best nachos I’ve ever had. It’s not your standard mince concoction, but pieces of slow cooked beef in a savoury sauce. The process disentegrates the beef into small melt-in-the-mouth pieces and that tasty, tasty sauce. Comes standard with all the trimmings – guac, salsa, sour cream and even pesto. Some places charge extra for those bits, but not here. I couldn’t finish my portion unfortunately. I desparately wanted to and I feel like I’ve failed. I hope the chef wasn’t offended by my leftovers. I can’t vouch for authenticity since I’ve never eaten in Mexico, but I can vouch for the fact that this food is freakin delicious. Other Mexican places I’ve been to pale in comparison. El Camino is small and popular so it is a good idea to book to avoid disappointment. They play good music here (well, the stuff I listen to at home) but it might be a touch loud for some people…say if you didn’t like that kind of music. Price for nachos was reasonable at $12.50 and is one of …

Friday Favourites: Pan Fried Chicken with Lemon grass

Sometimes all you want is tasty meat, noodles or rice and maybe some broth. No fuss, no show, no silly prices. The Pan Fried Chicken with Lemon grass at Hansan Vietnamese restaurant comes on its own ($9), or with rice, vermicelli, rice noodle soup or egg noodle soup. For $10.50 it’s a delicious bargain. All mains at Hansan are around $10. Also try their summer rolls ($5) and spring rolls ($4.50). Come here for a healthy, quick, cheap meal. Friday Favourites 4: Western Springs Road Roll

One of my favourite sushi rolls is the Western Springs Road Roll at Taiko in Kingsland right by the train station. It is grilled teriyaki eel on cucumber avocado roll. It’s just a coincidence that we lived on Western Springs Road when we first tried this sushi dish. Taiko is one of my favourite Japanese restaurants because of its location, ambience and fantastic food at reasonable prices. Plenty of good sake and Japanese beers are available and Taiko also have wonderful banquet set meals for groups. I can’t count the number of times I’ve had the banquet but it’s been wonderful every time. Banquets are great as you just put your trust in the chefs and they bring out dish after dish of food throughout the night. They happily cater for vegetarians and pescatarians too. Best to order dishes tapas style to share or to dive into the banquet. Friday Favourites 3: Deep Fried Oyster sushi

Deep Fried Oyster sushi from Bian Sushi. It’s divine. Bian Sushi is one of my favourite sushi places in Auckland. They play light jazz, have a great selection of sushi which gets eaten quickly due to demand. High turnover means fresh sushi. At lunchtime, the queue can snake from  along the sushi counter, through the shop and out the door. Thankfully the line is a fast moving one. You should avoid sushi places that don’t have any customers. An empty dining room might be a warning, but the sushi that you eat will probably have been sitting there since the morning. Bian also have a menu if you want to order hot food from the kitchen and these come in full and half sizes. Half size is perfect if you can’t decide between sushi or hot food. You can have both! Highlights: Free green tea and free tartar sauce, Deep Fried Oyster sushi, green beans sushi, unagi and their spicy chicken rice dish (karaage). Friday Favourites 2: Chicken & mushroom pie, with pesto & parmesan

Chicken and mushroom pie, with pesto and parmesan from The Fridge. Big pieces of chicken breast and mushrooms in a creamy pesto sauce snuggled by a puff pastry shell. Actually, The Fridge do a lot of pies and they are all good. The Chicken and Mushroom pie just happens to be my favourite, but do try the others if they tickle your fancy. New Zealand’s most popular pie has got to be the humble mince and cheese pie, but at The Fridge, you will have to opt for a mince and mozzerella instead. Their Bacon and egg pie has mozzerella in it too. These pies can be wrangled with your hands, but they should be eaten with a knife and fork. If you’re not quite feeling up to a pie, the chicken and bacon caesar wrap is worth your time. The Fridge has been very kind to us in times when we are nursing a hangover. Their brand of gourmet lunch bar food fixes a hangover quick smart! The Fridge 507 New North Rd Kingsland Auckland Phone …

Friday Favourites 1: Salt Pepper Hapuka

Welcome to Friday Favourites! Every Friday I will post 1 favourite dish from 1 favourite restaurant. Salt Pepper Hapuka at Canton Cafe I dream about this dish all the time. Firm, bite sized chunks of  hapuka with a little chili and dice onion. This crunchy, boneless, deep fried number is never greasy. I can’t count the number times I’ve ordered this over the years but it’s always a winner. Nici Wickes (World Kitchen) from The New Zealand Herald put Canton Cafe down as number 17 in her 50 dishes to die for article last year. 17. The Canton Cafe in Kingsland has heaps of great dishes but we reckon the standout is chilli ginger prawns, closely followed by their salt, pepper and chilli hapuka. Canton Cafe is BYO with no corkage fee and is cramped, busy and noisy. Don’t come here for a romantic dinner. Do come here for cheap, fast, delicious food. Make sure you book ahead and allow some time to find that elusive Kingsland parking. All you can eat rice and tea to wash …
