A couple of weeks ago, we noticed a white spot over one of Tofu’s eyes. It looked like a cataract and dilated at different times of the day. When we visited the vet, she said the damage could be permanent and supplied some eye drops. Dilating means that he is getting some light in there and the pupil is reacting. That’s promising.
Tofu doesn’t seem bothered by the lack of sight in one eye. He’s his usual happy self and if anything, it makes it easier to wrangle him up at night. I don’t think he misses his full sight, he’s just adapted to function without. Being blind in one side is bad for a wild rabbit, but for rabbit that runs the entire backyard as his own domain, it’s not a problem.
So no image this week. In honour of Tofu’s blind side.
Check out previous Tofu Tuesday posts here.

Poor little Tofu! Hope his owners are doing okay.
Owners are doing ok thanks 🙂
Aww, poor tofu! Glad he is taking the hole thing in his stride/hop
Thanks Jessica. Hope you have family are well!
Ohhh Flatpac had an eye infection a few months back. It gave me a nasty scare because rabbits eyes are so close to their little (tiny if FP’s case) brains that the vet said the infection can spread and give them brain damage! I hope Tofu feels better soon 😦 It affected Flatpacs whole personality!
What were Flatpac’s symptoms? Tofu doesn’t appear to be behaving differently, but as we know, rabbits are very good at hiding their true feelings.
She had one crying eye for a day and then when it didn’t go away after 24 hours I took her straight to the vet. Inconveniently, you only know that they are sick when it is serious! She was so upset at the vet that she wet herself all over me. I felt so sorry for her 😦 Shes okay now though. She had eye drops twice a day for a week and she is her cheeky self!
Oh gosh. Poor Tofu! Are the eye drops helping? Can you get rid of cataracts if that’s what it is?
Humans get surgery for cataracts, but it doesn’t seem to be an option for bunnies. The eyedrops has cleared the teariness but the white spot on his eye is still there.
Aw. Glad to hear Tofu’s full life is not particularly interrupted by this turn of events!
Thanks Laura.
Oh no, Tofu, wish you all the best!
