With all the delicious winter apples we’ve been receiving in our CSA box, I wanted to do something with them that was easy and warming. It’s hard to eat cold fruit when you feel cold yourself and stewed apples are a great way to use up apples.
My simple recipe uses ingredients you probably already have. I did a similar treatment to rhubarb last summer and you can see that recipe here.
Brown Sugar Stewed Apples
Makes 2 to 4 servings
Ingredients
2 apples
1/2 cup soft brown sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
Optional: 1 shot limoncello
Preparation
- Peel apples and cut into quarters. Slice off centre, pips and discard. Cut the remaining quarters into 5 or 6 pieces each.
- Add apple and the other ingredients to a small saucepan on medium heat. Cook for 10 minutes stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon. Be careful not to burn the sugar, so if the sauce becomes thick and sticky, it is done.
- Serve on porridge, cake or ice cream. Refrigerate what you don’t use.
Note: Under no circumstances should you try to taste the hot mixture. It is molten lava. You have been warned.
Cook’s treat
To deglaze the saucepan, add 1 cup of milk and bring to simmer. Stir with a wooden spoon until your pan is clean. Drink your delicious brown sugar and apple flavoured milk or give it to someone who will appreciate it.
YUM! As soon as the apples where we live aren’t terrible (in the fall) I’m trying this. Mr Impybat doesn’t discriminate against apples but I sure do.
That looks very good and so few ingredients. In the picture, what dish do you have the apples over?
Hi Limitlessons, I just had them in a bowl of porridge (oatmeal). I never liked porridge until this winter so I’m frantically catching up on a lifetime of porridge. I even have a sachet of instant porridge in my handbag today.
It looks really good. It’s too hot for oatmeal in California right now but over the fall I have it every morning with dried fruit. Perhaps I’ll try it with brown sugar stewed apples.
You could try these apples with vanilla ice cream for a simple dessert. You could even add a vanilla bean to the stew. Mmmm…I think that would be goooood.
Limoncello? For breakfast? I like your style!
lol. I forgot about the Limoncello when I put it on my breakfast!
These pictures are gorgeous!
Thanks foureyes!
What a lovely warming recipe. Thanks for the warning. Did Tofu enjoy the cores? You have to be careful that he doesn’t eat the seeds, I heard it was bad for bunnies.
Hi Eva, I heard seeds were bad for everyone so Tofu doesn’t get the cores. He gets the washed peels. He loves those.
lol im a bunny too, but my bf is a pig instead of a Koala. u guys are a much cuter combo tho
I love your blog and blog name! Pork belly is much more delicious than koala 🙂
Oohhhh! I can’t wait for some apples. These look out of this world!!!
Come and add this link to the party…http://inherchucks.com/2012/08/02/whats-in-the-box-37/. Looking forward to seeing you there 🙂
This looks delish!
Thanks Nova Girl!
Apples don’t last long at our place. If Flatpac doesn’t get her 1/4 apple with her dinner, she gives me this look like, so where’s my dessert? I always take them to eat in traffic in the mornings 🙂 I love the smell that stewed apples have. It fills the house and smells deliciously warm!
We ate a lot of apples this week. I used the last apple last night but only because The Koala had been strictly warned that I was saving that apple for our deviled sausages. Otherwise I’m sure it would have been eaten earlier in the week.
