It’s the start of December, which means the start of summer and the weather is getting better here in Auckland. Sorry to rub it in for those suffering wintery weather. Sorry. Not sorry.
With a new month comes a new edition of Our Growing Edge. This month will be hosted by Christine and Kath from Garden Eats.
Christine and Kath are keen organic gardeners and foodies in New York and California. Checking out Christine’s Instagram, it’s hard to imagine she’s starting winter. San Diego is currently at 18°C / 65°F today and Auckland is currently at 16°C / 61°F, it’s warmer there than it is here. Madness!
It’s no secret that December is a time of big spending, festivities and gluttony. I love gluttonous festivities!
As of this week, New Zealand has lowered it’s drink driving tolerance. A strategic move.
Last week, an average sized dude could drive 5 standard drinks, an averaged sized lady could drink 3.5 standard drinks and then legally get behind a wheel and drive.
This week, dudes are only allowed 3.5 standard drinks and ladies only allowed 2.5 standard drinks.
I’m learning to drive. I like to be stone cold sober when I get behind the wheel, but I have driven after 1 drink on occasion, and only because there was no other sober driver.
I know the law change is probably unpopular right now, but I fully embrace it. It’s about time we got stricter. Too many people drive when they have been drinking. Just leave the car at home. Take a taxi or bus.
We’re having our work Christmas party in a couple of days and we’re getting there and back via Uber. Not even going to try and drive. That would be stupidity.
I’m curious what the drink driving laws are where you are and how closely they are followed? Would you get behind the wheel after 3 drinks? 4? Does your local law allow it?
As we head into the silly season, please be safe and make good decisions!
It’s kinda nice to be rocking the warm
weather when everyone else seems to be writing about the cold, eh 🙂
I don’t usually think about drunk driving laws in other places – interesting. We use blood alcohol levels. Anything over .08 (1-3 drinks for women or 2-4 for men). We also have no refusal weekends when cops can take a blood test to check without needing permission. Do you have those?
What made you learn to drive? It’s sort of a necessity here – I couldn’t even get to work without driving.
We use blood alcohol levels here too but those numbers mean nothing to the average layperson so I used the standard drinks guide in my example. 1-3 drinks for women is quite a range! I guess it’s not so different to our 2.5 drinks for women.
I’m learning to drive because I thought it would be useful. I walk to work and most other places. I am limited I guess, but I’ve never known anything different so it works for me. Even if I bought a car and could drive, I wouldn’t drive to work. It’s a 10 minute walk away and parking is a bitch!
