Auckland Restaurant Month 2014 – top picks

August is Auckland Restaurant Month and the menus for the 100 participating restaurants have been posted already. I know it’s a whole month away, but a month is good time to make dates with friends and tick off a few restaurants on the way. There are some fabulous specials and this is a great way to try out some of Auckland’s best restaurants on a range of budgets. It was hard (and hungry) work, but I’ve picked out 10 of my favourite specials which  range from $25 to $100 per person. Auckland Restaurant Month top 10 picks: (In order of budget) 1. Fukuko Britomart, Cocktail bar $25 for 2 snack courses and a shochu cocktail of your choice. Includes a steamed pork bun and 2 tacos (your choice of braised miso short rib, sticky pulled pork, spiced roast duck, sole tempura). http://www.fukuko.co.nz   2. Besos Latinos Elliot Stables, Latin American gourmet $25 for cornchips, your choice of taco and a classic margarita. Tofu Tuesday: The grass beneath his paws

Thank you for your wishes, Tofu is doing as well after surgery. Today was his final dose of pain meds though he still has another week of antibiotics to go. For the first 2 days after surgery, Tofu stayed in his area of the house, dozing and eating, eating and dozing. He wasn’t eating a lot at the start but his appetite gets stronger each day. Over the last couple of days he did a few extra things that showed he was starting to feel better: He started hanging out in the lounge with us again He jumped up onto the couch for snuggles He enjoyed some time in the backyard He came into the kitchen (at the other end of the house) to beg for treats Tofu hates medicine time and gets feisty as hell but forgives us soon after. The Koala and I are just glad we don’t have to do any more injections. The medicine was thick so the needle was fat. I realised I have had heaps of needles in me, but never poked a needle into …

Monday Bunday: Petite Bunny Gloss Bar

I bought one of these cute Petite Bunny Gloss Bars by TONYMOLY a while ago because of the adorable packaging. Turns out I really liked the product as well. The colours are cute and subtle and each comes with a delicious flavour. I got the winking one but there is something very alluring about the angry one on the end. You can get them for around $10US from many online retailers.

Tofu Tuesday: Bye Bye Left Eye

Yesterday Tofu had his left eye removed. On Friday evening, I noticed Tofu’s left eye was sealed shut. I freaked out and called the vet immediately and we spent a big chunk of Saturday on standby at the vet clinic. Problems with rabbits escalate very quickly so if you have a pet rabbit and you have any concerns, do not hesitate to see your vet. The clinic was really busy with a bunch of emergencies, but we were also considered urgent by the vet and able to get a diagnosis. Tofu had a corneal ulcer which became severely infected within 24 hours. He probably scratched it or a piece of hay may have poked him in the eye. He already had cataracts in both eyes, so sight wasn’t an issue, but infection is bad news. We were given antibiotics and a follow up visit for Monday. He was super hungry over the weekend and got plenty of snuggles. It was traumatic having force open his red, pus-ridden eye four times a day to administer Chlorsig drops and ointment for infection. He didn’t like us …

Monday Bunday: Rabbits Love Scarves

This very sweet scarf-wearing rabbit illustration is by Donna McKenzie. She sells her prints on Etsy and you can see this image and more on her website: www.donnamckenzieillustration.com I love how suddenly regal or gentlemanly this rabbit looks. I’ve been wearing a scarf most days, I hope I look this fancy. Tofu the bunny doesn’t wear a scarf, he has a nice fluffy dewlap the doubles as a scarf. Hope you are keeping warm this winter! The winter solstice happened upon us over the weekend and I’m very much looking forward to longer days. Walking to work in the dark feels so wrong.

Banana for scale

The Honesty Box has been feeding us each week and while I haven’t been keeping up with my documenting of each box due to the crappy evening light, I had to just quickly show you this glorious mushroom that was delivered in yesterday’s box. This monster is a whopping 16cm wide (over 6 inches). I don’t know what I’m going to do with it but I’m adamant that I want to serve it whole because it feels like a shame to slice it up. We actually have 2 mushrooms so The Koala and I can have one each. What would you do with it?

Tofu Tuesday: Lens Flare

Our neighbours are having a fence put in, so until the new fence goes up, there is nothing to separate our properties. They have a dog, we’ve got a rabbit and therefore, Tofu the bunny has been spending his days indoors. He hasn’t been pleased about it but in the weekend, we cordoned off the deck so that he could have some sunshine time. I liked the random lens flares in this photo. I think Tofu somehow manipulated the sun.

Monday Bunday: Pink Rabbit Eats Planets

Happy Monday! Hope you all had a lovely weekend. The Koala and I had the best weekend in ages. I think when the week is long and hard the weekends feel particularly short and sweet. I couldn’t find the artist responsible for this amazing image which I found via Tumblr. If you know who I can credit this to please let me know! I would love to know of the context, if it is a stand alone painting or if it is movie. It looks very 1960’s sci-fi pulp. It is so awesomely bizarre. I’d love it as a print in my office. Edit: Thanks to Kara La La La, I now know this is by Joel F. Naprstek. With his name I was able to find more about this piece: “Art by Joel Naprstek for “Just a Couple Of Space Rogues Playing Name That Tune.”, written by Adam Troy-Castro. See Joel’s work here: http://jfnstudios.net/index.html

Fig and Gorgonzola Rounds

This post is part of Our Growing Edge, a monthly blogging event to encourage us to try new food related things. Phuong from My Kitchen of Love is the host for this month’s event. If you have a blog and you are eating or cooking something new this month, click below to join.   Orleans I’ve been obsessed with New Orleans since I was an angsty teenager. Long, long before I had any interest in food, I fell in love with the people, the French influence, the mystery  and the vampires. I blame Anne Rice novels. I’ve yet to visit New Orleans but it is number 100 on my bucket list. When I “grew up” and my interest for food developed, my obsession with New Orleans deepened. At the start of March, on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras celebration day in New Orleans) my friends and I converged on the newish Auckland restaurant, bar, speakeasy, smoky blues and jazz club called Orleans, in Britomart. Traditionally the day of debauchery before Lent starts, Fat Tuesday is all about living large with …

Monday Bunday: BOLD

We’re having a very snug Queen’s birthday weekend here in Auckland. On the cotton-tails of Citta’s sleepy rabbit cushion last week, here’s a bunny cushion by another NZer called BOLD. BOLD was born after a DIY lampshade inspired a Hawkes Bay mother to make lampshades for sale and more recently she has branched out to cushions. This very lovely cushion would look great on in our house. Very styley, not too “crazy bunny lady”. Fabric is by Holli Zollinger at Spoonflower.

Tofu Tuesday: Textiles

It’s a week until winter arrives and we’ve been hit with a sudden cold snap. Heater, dehumidifier and hot water bottles were deployed last night. The last few weeks has seen me stocking up on warm things at Kmart. It’s my new favourite discount store. Most of the time I’m browsing for bargains. Things that look more expensive and well made than their price suggests. It’s kind of a game. I’m on a bit of a geometric kick at the moment which you may have noticed if you follow my Pinterest boards. Above we have Tofu the bunny with black and white geometric scarf and blue tone geometric cushion from Kmart. (Fur coat model’s own)

Make Tzatziki

Have you heard of Tzatziki? Tzatziki is a thick yogurt and cucumber dip that works with range of dishes. It’s cooling and lovely and surprisingly easy to make. Tzatziki has been on my foodie bucket list for a long time. I put it on there because The Koala was obsessed with Delisio Greek Tzatziki flavoured chips. He’s since moved on but the Tzatziki remained on my list. Had I known how easy and versatile it was to make, I probably wouldn’t have waited all these years. Below is a recipe for Tzatziki and a bonus 2 recipes that complement it. Tzatziki Recipe adapted from Nici Wicke’s recipe here. Makes about 2 cups Ingredients 1 cup Greek yogurt* 1 cup grated cucumber, squeezed of excess liquid ½ teaspoon salt 2 cloves of garlic, minced 1 tablespoon chopped mint 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon lemon juice Preparation Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Taste and adjust seasoning to your liking. Chill prior to use and stir before serving. Use as a dipping sauce, a side …

Tofu Tuesday: P-p-p-poker Face

P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face (Mum mum mum mah) P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face (Mum mum mum mah) The Koala and I often think that Tofu has a great poker face. It’s hard to know what side he’s picketing at times and he is always fabulous. With that in mind, I present to you: black lace bunny ears on Lady Gaga and Bunny Gaga. Who wore it better?

Monday Bunday: Sleepy Rabbit by Citta Design

This morning, The Koala started his new job. He was up before dawn and handed me a sleepy rabbit to snuggle with in his place. Tofu the bunny is extra lovely in the morning, especially when he wants to do a bit more snoozing. You can rub his ears and cheeks and he will grind his teeth in delight (kind of like a cat purring). Even after I’d gotten up, showered, dressed and breakfasted, Tofu the bunny was still snuggling on the bed enjoying the residual warmth. I felt cruel when it was time to scoop him up and put him outside. On that note, I’d like to present to you this new design called “Sleepy Rabbit” by New Zealand company Citta Design. Citta Design are just around the corner from where I live, work and play and they even have an outlet store next door to BLOC. I often visit during lunch time for a bit of window shopping. Kind of like a real life Pinterest. I could walk around the store putting little pin …
