Tofu Tuesday: Double Rainbow
There was a double rainbow over our way last week. The strong proud one in the centre and a fainter one up on the right. At times there was even a third underneath the main arc.

The Koala plays Street Fighter and he has been trying to teach Tofu how to play. Tofu mostly just mashes the buttons, but boy does he have a good game face.
Tofu the bunny has been more active. We thought that he didn’t jump up onto the couch and bed because he was getting old, but after surgery, he has been jumping up onto the couch. On Friday we returned to the vet for a follow-up visit. They were pleased with his progress. One vet thought she recognised a picture of Tofu on the internet. She showed me the picture of this bok choy monster and yep, that’s him. The team at Lynfield Vets practice rabbit sorcery. They do amazing work and we are comforted by the fact there are always other rabbits in the waiting room when we visit. Want to see more bunny shaming? See here.
The rabbit knows how to relax.
Tofu has been recovering well from surgery. Last week he was anxious to be outside. It’s been hot here and all windows and doors need to be open. I used the top part of Tofu’s cage to block the back door so that air could flow through the house without letting the rabbit out. Tofu rattled that cage like an angry beast. Tofu has been allowed to go outside since last Friday and since it’s still hot out, he has been spending time under the stairs or in the hole he has made between branches within the shrubbery. The picture above is of Tofu just outside that hole.
It has been 1 week since Tofu’s surgery to remove a bladder stone. Tofu has 7 stitches in his belly and until he is healed, he has lots of towels instead of hay. We’re also keeping him inside for now to limit his movement and chances of anything poking into his tender belly. It is a little extra laundry but no biggie. Tofu is getting plenty of snuggles and is eating well. He is currently on 3 meds a day: Deprim – antibiotic Metacam – pain and inflammation Temgesic – a strong opioid for pain relief Tofu says thank you to all your well wishes.
On Tuesday, Tofu the bunny had surgery to remove a large bladder stone and yesterday the vet gave him the all clear to come home. Tofu wasn’t eating at the vet’s but if he was feeling depressed, going home might be good for him. If he didn’t eat during the night he would have to go back to the vet today. At first we kept him in his indoor hutch to restrict movement so he didn’t injure or bother his stitches but he had other ideas. He was stressed about being locked up and frantically looked for the way out, so we freed him. After inspecting his area a couple of times (to make sure it was just how he left it), he proceeded to spend most of the evening eating. He needed a little bit of encouragement but last night he ate: 1 grape 1 large bok choy 2 coriander plants 1/4 cup of pellets a few bits of hay Not bad for a rabbit who wasn’t eating! He wasn’t eating much this morning …
Tofu hasn’t been well over the last few days. He was great for a few months but over the last weekend he became messy in the undercarriage and looked very uncomfortable. In September he had his bladder flushed and a course of meds. A bottom shaved helped keep things in check too. Since then, things have looked pretty good until the end of last week. Not only had we switched to the vet recommended pellets but we’ve cut portions severely over the last 5 months. In the last week or so he has eaten only a handful of pellets as we’re trying to encourage hay and fresh greens instead. He will not eat hay if a full pellet bowl awaits him. His appetite has been pretty normal and he has been drinking water. He still enjoys around 10 hours a day roaming free in the backyard and snuggles with us in the evenings (and some mornings). On Sunday, he even jumped up onto the couch for a snuggle which is quite a feat for a sick, blind …
Bok choy is one of Tofu’s favourite vegetables. He always begins at the dark leafy end. If he gets lots of bok choy, he will only eat the leafy end of each leaf, leaving the lighter stems behind. But if given bok choy sparingly, he will finish the whole thing. Selective eating. People all over the world do it. So now I only give him a couple of leaves at a time. When he finishes leaf and stem, he can have more.
We might not have a hotel room filled with bunnies, but Tofu the bunny approves of our bunny print pillow cases. These were a gift but you can get your own from Father Rabbit. Artwork by Angela McKay for Father Rabbit.
I would argue that Tofu is in fact king every day. He does rather suit a crown though don’t you think?
Tofu the bunny has never been much of a drinker. He either doesn’t get thirsty or forgets to drink water. Good thing there is plenty of water in all the fresh vegies and grass that he eats. We recently bought him a water bottle and after a few lessons, (yes, a rabbit must be taught how to use a water bottle) he now drinks from it on his own.
The Koala and I hadn’t seen Tofu the bunny all day and went went out and didn’t get home until midnight. The Koala went to fetch Tofu the bunny from our backyard and was surprised to find traces of pink lipstick on his fluffy bunny head. Sometimes we wonder if Tofu the bunny leads a mysterious double life. I think this proves it. Photos taken from the morning after. The lipstick was less prominent, but still there. So, which one of you has been kissing Tofu?
Tofu the bunny wishes everyone a Merry Christmas. Enjoy the company and of course the food. Be safe out there on the roads and don’t be afraid of wearing stretchy pants.
Tofu the bunny heard there was a boy who likes robots. Tofu the bunny vs Gundam.
We received a wonderfully summery bounty from The Honesty Box this week. Strawberries, raspberries, avocados, plums, nectarines, peaches, cherry tomatoes and more. Tofu the bunny had never met a raspberry before so I figured it was time. I thought that it would be love at first sniff but he wouldn’t even give it a lick. OK little bunny. Suit yourself. I’ll just leave it here in case you change your mind. When I checked on the raspberry a few hours later, it had vanished. *Please note, raspberry is a very occasional treat for rabbits…Maybe once in a lifetime.
My sister saw these knitted headphones on Monday Bunday and brought a set home from Australia. Tofu tries them on for size.
Our friend Maxie left her sunglasses behind so we’re looking after them until we see her next. Summer is here!
Tofu can be often be found snoozing under the stairs outside.
Following Tofu around the yard, he turns to face the camera.
