Tofu Tuesday: Winter sun

I caught Tofu the bunny sitting in the coldest, wettest part of our garden. You know, the area that gets no sun in the winter. …So I scooped him up and put him the sunniest, driest part of our garden. He promptly aimed his butt at the sun and stretched out. I think he liked it. Click here to see more editions of Tofu Tuesday.

#BirdOnAWireIsComing #WineIsComing

Game of Rhones, it’s on Saturday 4 July at Shed 10 on Queens Wharf. Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney have had their events and now it’s Auckland left. Over 100 wines by 20 producers, it’s going to be a hell of an afternoon. Check out my intro post here. The great thing about being last in a series of events is you get to see all the photos of the earlier events on Instagram as they happen…and get ideas for costumes. Game of Thrones attire is encouraged. If you feel silly dressing up in Game of Thrones gear, just know that after a few wines, you’ll be glad you did. Early Raven tickets were $40 and regular tickets are $50. The ticket price includes all tastings and a wine glass. Food (provided by Bird and Wire) is extra. For more information see the Game of Rhones website or their Facebook page here. I will be there in costume, with a prepped liver, an appetite and a camera. Will you? All men must dine Auckland’s event will be catered for by Bird …

Tofu Tuesday: Rank Ass Leaf

I think every pet owner has caught their pet eating something gross. As adorable and as well fed as they are, pets just can’t help but eat weird shit they find. If you know anything about rabbits, then you might know that rabbits eat poop. Yes, literally. As sweet as bunny kisses are, you must remember. They eat poop. I once caught Tofu the bunny under our lemon tree eating a rotten lemon. The lemon old, squishy and covered in ants. Tofu had this look of pure bliss on his face and pure disappointment when I took the lemon from him. Other things we catch Tofu eating are the rank ass leaves in the back yard. The ranker, the better. I walk to the markets twice a week to select the brightest, greenest greens for Tofu the bunny. Then he goes into our backyard and selects the oldest, yuckiest brown leaves for himself. Makes sense. Here he is munching on one such leaf. I let him finish the leaf rather than taking it from him. It’s …

Black and white

#NZbloggers are hosting a weekly blog post challenge. This week’s theme is Contrast and you can check out other posts on this theme here. I have to admit, I’m a sucker for a striking black and white kitchen. I love the contrast, especially how it pops with accents of gold or greenery. Living in a rental, I’m blessed with a brown, beige and taupe kitchen with a utilitarian  steel bench (oh how dreamy!). I dream of the day when I can have black and white kitchen with gold or brass tapware and bright green plants. Until then, here’s a round up of some rather lovely monochromatic things for the kitchen from New Zealand retailers and manufacturers. Click on the descriptions for direct links to purchase. Banh mi in winter

Early 2000’s, The Koala and I arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam at 6am local time during the coldest month of the year. We’d just flown in from balmy Kuala Lumpur and had been awake for at 24 hours. We weren’t prepared for the cold but we dumped our stuff at our hotel and went exploring. The city was wide awake, bright and bustling. Big baskets of bread stacked on the footpath and banh mi sellers bundled up and huddled together like winter birds cozied up on a branch. What is banh mi? For those unfamiliar with banh mi, the word “banh mi” (pronounced BUN-mee) just means “bread” in Vietnamese but has come to mean a single serve baguette sandwich. The French colonials left behind baguettes and pate when they left Vietnam in the 1950s and the locals created this awesome fusion sandwich before fusion was a thing. Stuffed with pork or chicken, pate, mayo, cucumber, coriander (cilantro), pickled vegetables and sometimes chillies, they are made fresh to order so you get to choose (in our case point) the …

#Winteriscoming #Wineiscoming

Winter is coming! Winter is coming! If you watch Game of Thrones, this will be a familiar phrase. The Koala and I were quite late to Game of Thrones. We started watching at season 3 and binged on 30 episodes in about 3 weeks. Now that we’re caught up we have to wait week by week like peasants. PEASANTS! A little while ago, my friend Miss A told me about a Game of Thrones-themed wine-tasting event. Called Game of Rhones, it’s on Saturday 4 July at Shed 10 on Queens Wharf. The event has been celebrated in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and for the first time this year, Sydney and Auckland. A celebration of fierce reds from the Rhone Valley in France representing faraway lands. There will also be 20 wine producers from our own land to battle them. Vote for your favourite wine and the winning house will rule the iron throne (or something). Tyrion would approve. Game of Thrones attire is encouraged. If you feel silly dressing up in Game of Thrones gear, just …

That Sugar Film – Review

Firstly, I want to say this is not a health blog. I don’t preach health advice because I’m not a health professional and I don’t feel like I have any business writing about health. I write about food because I enjoy cooking and eating food. However, this is a film review about a health documentary. For those who are doing JunkFreeJune, this film may be the push you need to get through the second half of the month. The premise Australian director/film maker/writer Damon Gameau does not eat sugar. His diet of healthy fats, proteins, fruits and vegetables is one that we could probably all aspire to. To try and prove a point and to make a documentary, he embarks on a 60 day “average sugar diet” while eating “healthy food” to see the changes to his body and mind. Watch the official trailer here: The average Australian (man, woman or child) consumes 40 teaspoons of sugar a day, which is mostly hidden in processed foods. I found it really interesting is that Damon didn’t eat any …

Auckland Fair June 2015

This Sunday at Shed 10 on Queens Wharf, New Zealand’s best makers will gather and present their wares. Entry is $5. You can bet that all around the country there are makers working day and night over the next few days to get ready for this huge event. There are over 150 independent makers and to cover the all would be impossible. To keep a list manageable I’ve compiled a little list of makers who may appeal to the foodie in you. Helo Birdie Auckland based artist Joey Ho creates watercolour and gouache paintings, prints and cards. Works feature tiny people, wonderful landscapes, cactus and of course, food. She is probably the coolest little sister in the world. No bias or anything… http://helobirdie.com Helo Birdie on Instagram Miss Changy Artist Ruby White presents a ceramic plates, cups and her signature rooster bowls. I have to admit, I have a girl crush on Miss Changy. She cooks from scratch, she makes furniture and all the ceramics her diners eat out of. Over achieve much? http://misschangy.com Miss Changy on Instagram …

Tofu Tuesday: Winter palm sunset

Winter is coming. Tofu didn’t want to go outside yesterday morning. Typical Monday.  I scooped him up and placed him by the back door to check out the backyard. He said a big, “NOPE!” and hopped back to his room. But the weather turned out to be glorious so I popped off home at lunch and let him outdoors. By then the world was warm (hot even) and he was keen. I also took the opportunity to hang up a load of washing and throw another load in. You gotta use every ounce of sunshine you can get. By the time I get home from work at 5.15pm each day, the sun has already dropped below the horizon. Not ideal for photography but Tofu the bunny assured me it could work if I lifted him up towards the dying light.  He was right. Of course. I like how the palm trees in the background suggest we are somewhere much warmer. Click here to see more editions of Tofu Tuesday.

The pros and cons of living with a food blogger

#NZbloggers are hosting a weekly blog post challenge. This week’s theme is Neutral and you can check out other posts on this theme here. It’s hard for me to be neutral about most things but I can at least try to be objective. I could be (a little) biased, but living with a food blogger has got to be a win.  For shits and giggles, here’s a handy guide. To keep it fair, I made a list of 10 for each side. Make up your own mind. This post is for entertainment purposes only. Please enjoy with a pinch of sea salt. I take no responsibility for your life choices.

Ma Cherie: Passions In Life

#NZbloggers are hosting a weekly blog post challenge. This week’s theme is Passions In Life and you can check out other posts on this theme here. Passions in life I have been designing for 10 years and extremely fortunate to have found my passion early. When I was fifteen I wanted to be a graphic designer and by sixteen I had done work experience at two design agencies. At seventeen I was awarded a scholarship and at eighteen accepted into a design programme. I have collected a couple more passions over the years but graphic design is my greatest passion (and the one that puts food on the table). This post is about another person who found their passion at fifteen and is creating his own delicious empire on the back of that passion. Ma Cherie I was delighted to be invited to the grand opening of Ma Cherie’s courtyard cafe in Ponsonby last week. It was an evening of tasty morsels, music and French champagne. The macaron tower was the star and was well and truly devoured over the course of the evening. I brought along my …

Deli Man: interview with director Erik Greenberg Anjou

If you like food, you must see food documentary Deli Man. Run. Don’t walk. Grab a pastrami sandwich on the way. Deli Man talk, dinner, movie combo Yesterday, I rounded up bunch of foodies, bloggers and food bloggers to check out Deli Man at Documentary Edge with all the trimmings. Our appetiser was a free talk by the directors of two food documentaries. Director Erik Greenberg Anjou, the director of Deli Man and one of the directors of documentary For Grace, Mark Helenowski. Both directors showed trailers and clips from the movie and after an hour of food discussion we were HUNGRY. For our main course, we visited The Fed with the Deli Man dinner special. The Fed are official sponsors for Deli Man at the film festival so it seemed fitting to dine there before the movie. For $25 per head we enjoyed Matzo ball soup, pastrami with pickles and mustard, spit roast chicken and gravy, poutine, creamy slaw with peanuts, mash and gravy finished with coffee and NY cheesecake. Washed down with a cocktail and large serving of food …

Baked butter & maple figs

The following post is part of a series of recipes celebrating figs. This is a simple recipe, great for dinner parties as you can get the figs prepped ahead of time and then pop them in the oven for 10 minutes shortly after dinner. I’ve written this recipe for 2 people, but it’s easy to multiply for more, just allow 2-3 figs per person. I was happy with 2 figs but my sweet tooth friends preferred 3. This recipe is gluten free. Most ice creams are gluten free but if serving with ice cream, double check the ingredients list. Greek yogurt is gluten free so that’s a safe option. Baked butter & maple figs (with yogurt or ice cream) Serves 2 for dessert Ingredients 6 figs Maple syrup 2 slivers of butter Greek yogurt or ice cream to serve Preparation Preheat oven to 200°C (390°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, cut a cross in the top of each fig, and place on the sheet. Insert a sliver of butter into each fig and …
