Thanksgiving

Happy Turkey Day my American friends! Any day to tuck into a big feast and wear one of my many pairs of stretchy pants is a day I’m interested in celebrating. If you have seen the internet before, you may be familiar with the “Hey Girl Ryan Gosling” meme where love struck fan girls write ridiculously over the top feminist quotes next to photos of the actor. As if boyfriends and husbands didn’t hate him enough. This one is reblogged from Hipster Ryan Gosling. Apparently, hipsters inherently know how to eat.

Mini Party Scones

Do not trust these seemingly innocent baked goods. Mini items are deceptive. Because they’re so small, they hardly count as food. So you pop one of babies into your mouth each time you walk by and before you know it, you’ve eaten ten. True story. It happened to me and it may happen to you. Scones are not too different in composition from the American biscuit, though they’re usually eaten differently. Cheap and filling, they’re never far away from the menus of cafes and lunchrooms and often one of the first things a child will bake in school cooking class. Sometimes there are different ways to say a word: the posh way and the common way. I’ve always called a scone a “skon” which rhymes with con, swan and Tron, but the posh way to pronounce it would be to call it a “skone” rhymes with bone, phone and loan. I play pretend posh and I jokingly call it “skone” so often that it’s part of my vocabulary now. So call it “skon” or “skone”, …

Everything is too delicious – Taste 2012

It’s my birthday week and I’ll go to a bunch of awesome foodie events if I want to. I love this shiz. Food, wine, good music and the best company. Yes please! My friends Coco and Livvy went with me to opening night tonight. Taste of Auckland started today at Victoria Park, Auckland City and boy what a treat. Coco is a seasoned Taste veteran like me and it was Livvy’s first time. We are all pretty adventurous eaters so it was fun to share our dishes. We arrived keen as beans, just after 5.30pm and stayed until the 9.30pm closing. I would recommend the full 4 hours to get a well paced walk through and a class or two of your choice. The weather was perfect with only a the tiniest hint of drizzle later in the evening. Not enough for us to head to shelter or pull out umbrellas. From the 11 restaurants represented, we tried 9 dishes from 9 restaurants. Not bad, maybe with an extra person we could have made it to …

Go on Hush Puppy. Beast it.

Movies are the new books. In lieu of a foodie book this month, I’m reviewing a foodie movie. Don’t call me lazy, I’m still reading. It just happens to be a really long book and it’s not a foodie one. The Koala and I attended Films For Foodies last night at Rialto (courtesy of Rialto Newmarket). Films For Foodies is a monthly event, carefully curated to appeal to foodies. For $35 per person, there was a plate each of southern influenced food from The Professional Bar & Restaurant school, a glass of wine, lemon cheesecake from Gu and a foodie goodie bag. All this was enough for a light dinner. The movie started a little late and after some prizes and talk, we settled in to watch this month’s foodie movie: Beasts Of The Southern Wild. The movie Set in a fictional place called the Bathub just outside the levies of New Orleans, Louisiana, this story is told through the eyes of six year old Hush Puppy. What can I say? I loved the movie. …

Taste of Auckland is almost here

Taste of Auckland at Victoria kicks off tomorrow and runs through until Sunday. Last year it coincided with the Rugby World Cup with an additional Taste at The Cloud event and was renamed Taste of New Zealand, but this year it is back to it’s original name. I look forward to this every year because it’s just another excuse to be a glutton. Seriously though, the food at Taste is stunning to look at a even better to eat. It’s different to The Food Show as it is more fine dining and gourmet products. I think of The Food Show as the supermarket expo and Taste as the fine dining and gourmet expo. What’s on There are various masterclasses: whiskey, coffee and cocktails as well as chef cooking demonstrations on stage. This year, 11 restaurants will be featuring 3 dishes each at about $8-12 a plate. Gourmet food, wine and booze producers will also be out in full force and Taste is always a great opportunity to taste new things and grab bargains. The Menu The awesome thing about …

Monday Bunday: Seven Psychopaths

This poster for new movie Seven Psychopaths features the gravelly Tom Waits with a blue eyed white rabbit. I particularly like the catchphrase “The one with the bunny” which I assume refers to his character rather than the movie. I love Tom Wait’s voice and his song “Misery Is The River Of The World” always has me picturing a lip synching Cookie Monster. Below are some screenshots of Tom Waits and various bunnies. I haven’t seen the movie yet but hopefully the storyline doesn’t feature any ill will to the his bunnies. With a title referring to not one but seven psychopaths, it’s not looking hopeful. http://www.sevenpsychopaths.com

Monday Bunday: My Morning Jacket

I don’t like guns, but I once emptied out a Smith and Wesson revolver into a bunch of paper targets. It was strangely exhilarating. It was scary, but not in a “I’m going to kill someone” kind of way. This gig poster for My Morning Jacket and Band of Horses features a bunny target. It implies violence but it’s just a graphic. I love it as a poster, but I wouldn’t shoot at it. Designed by Michael Tabie and Karen Goheen from Two Arms Inc., this limited edition poster is available for $25US at Two Arms Inc.

Guest Blog: Keeping Up With The Holsbys cake and cheese

It’s November the first and what better way to mark this always busy month than to hand my blog over to a special guest blogger. Danielle from Keeping Up With The Holsbys suggested a guest blog swap and it’s nice to have her fill a gap that this blog has. Danielle and I are blogging buddies and she lives just three hours away in Sydney, Australia with her gorgeous family. I’ve loved watching her blog grow and swell with goodness. You can read more of her hilarious and brutally honest brand of writing here. Below is her delicious post on cake and cheese. Pineapple Curd Cake with Homemade Ricotta I used to think a tuffet was your bum. That’s what Little Miss Muffet was sitting on, right? Her butt? Alas, no, a tuffet is a pouffe, but I think that ‘Little Miss Muffet sat on her pouffe’ just doesn’t rhyme, and is a bit weird all-round. In fact, I think the entire nursery rhyme is a bit weird all-round. Little Miss Muffet Sat on her tuffet (big …

5 THINGS IN OCTOBER

Two things that inspired this post. First thing: On Wednesdays, Riz from Riz Made This posts a short list of things she loves. Every week! It’s her slightly altered version of a gratitude list. Second thing: The header on Writagal’s blog caught my eye the other day: This is your life. Do what you love and do it often. While we amass hundreds, thousands, millions of pins or posts on Pinterest, Reddit, Tumblr or whatever you prefer, we are squirreling away things that tickle us instead of actually doing things. It’s often easier said than done to go out and live rather than thinking about living. I figure that by consciously writing and reviewing lists of things that make us happy, we won’t forget them and we have less time to dwell on things that make us sad, stressed, upset, angry, etc. Besides, I’m a list making machine. 5 things that have made me happy this month: VERBS Wiki: A verb, from the Latin verbum meaning word, is a word (part of speech) that in syntax conveys an action (bring, read, walk, run, learn), an occurrence (happen, become), or …

October Book Review: How to Eat a Small Country: A Family’s Pursuit of Happiness, One Meal at a Time by Amy Finlay

How to Eat a Small Country: A Family’s Pursuit of Happiness, One Meal at a Time by Amy Finlay, 2011. I picked up this book from Amazon a few months ago and I’ve been savouring it ever since. I dream of eating my way around the world and Amy’s escape to France really appealed to me. A mouth watering, sometimes icky account of a mother’s culinary tour around the romantic French countryside to save her sanity, her family and her marriage. Amy is not your typical American foodie. She’s adventurous, strong willed and very creative. If you like reading to whet your appetite, this book is for you. She bares it all and it’s books like these that make me sad that people don’t read much anymore. This is not a stuffy touchy feely book, but it sure cuts and makes you feel. She doesn’t have all the answers and her writing style reminds us that we’re all just doing what we can. Read this if you… If you’ve been to France and want to …

Tofu Tuesday: Dredd 3D

The actor Karl Urban is from New Zealand and his latest movie Dredd – based on the comic Judge Dredd – looks promising. I bet you didn’t know that Tofu was originally offered the part but turned it down due to other commitments. He was a bit disappointed but these things happen. To cheer him up, The Koala and I fashioned a bunny sized Dredd helmet out of some card. What do you think?
