Clean Eating in Auckland

IMPORTANT: This article was published in 2014. Details may have changed.  I love dining out, but it can be hard to make healthy choices when dining out so I often view dining out as a chance to indulge in rich foods. It doesn’t have to be this way! Luckily, there are a few places in Auckland who are making huge effort to offer delicious healthy options. What I also love about these places is they can be great inspiration for cooking at home too. Most of these offerings are easy to recreate at home using fresh ingredients. I’m not a health nut, but with my health issues this year, I’ve been looking at what I eat more and focusing on clean eating and whole foods.

Peking Duck for busy people

Peking Duck is a dish that you fall in love with. World famous from Beijing, crispy roast duck is sliced with a high skin-to-meat ratio and eaten with spring onion (scallions), cucumber, hoisin (or plum) sauce and wrapped in thin Chinese pancakes. Think of it as Chinese duck tacos. Shared with others, you usually get 2-3 pieces per person as a starter dish. It may be frowned upon to scoff 10 pancakes and call it a meal, but would you judge me if I said I did exactly that twice for this post? Let’s call it “research purposes”. When dining at Chinese restaurants, my family orders Peking Duck on almost every special occasion. It’s a bit pricey, but it’s a treat. You should see our eyes light up when the dish is brought to the table. Your turn can’t come quick enough. When I introduced Peking Duck to The Koala, he was was a bit peeved that he had gone so long without it. He loved it too. Beijing Duck In 2006, The Koala and I ate visited Beijing and …

A Healthy Loaf

A basket of bread When a basket of fresh bread arrived on our doorstep, The Koala happened to be home alone. He confessed to me later that he wondered if the bread was part of a blog giveaway and perhaps he shouldn’t eat the bread. But his inner bread fiend won and he went ahead and helped himself to the bread.

Monday Bunday: Jermaine Rogers

Choices US artist Jermaine Rogers has just released a new vinyl figure of a knife-weilding rabbit titled “Choices”. “This 8 inch vinyl figure strikes an alert pose, wide-eyed and aware. Our little bunny must make an important choice…and he holds the instrument to carry out his decision. What bunny’s choice is and what the implications of his decision will be is for you to decide. ‘Choices’ (regular edition) figure is limited to 500 pieces worldwide.” The Koala and I have quite a collection of rabbit shaped vinyl toys already, but I want this one so bad!

Helo Birdie Giveaway

To celebrate 4 years of Bunny Eats Design, I’d like to share a few wonderful things that I’ve gushed about, salivated over and adored. My sister Joanne Ho who paints under the name Helo Birdie, had a solo exhibition a couple of weeks ago at Mea Culpa in Ponsonby. The turn out was great and while her painting style has evolved considerably since her last show, there are still some food themes going on there.

Spices for the eyes, heart and belly

Last Saturday, my friend Coco and I saw the foodporn movie The Hundred-Foot Journey courtesy of Zomato.com. If you like foodporn (also known as gastroporn) and feel-good comedy dramas, then I highly recommend The Hundred-Foot Journey. Also good for date night or a catchup up with foodie friends, just make sure you don’t watch this on an empty stomach and plan a dinner somewhere wonderful afterwards (Indian, French or both).
