Tofu Tuesday: Oh Hello OOOOBY
I was photographing our CSA bounty last week when who should appear at the back door?

There is a phrase in Cantonese that we don’t have in English, called yook-gun which literally translates to meat tight. It refers to the feeling you get when you see something so adorable or whimsical and your muscles tense up and you get super aggressive. A great example of this is in the animated movie Despicable Me when Agnes gets her unicorn toy. It’s soooo fluffy I’m going to DIE!!! Cat Rabbit makes me yook-gun. Cat Rabbit turns me into Agnes. I am in love with these hipster rabbits. Look at their spectacles. Look at their eye capsules. Look at their indignant little mouths. Look at their pulled up socks. Look at their collars and bow ties and scarves and capes. The detail makes me want to burst into tears. They are the best in the world and it physically breaks my heart to look at these too long. Melbourne based textile-artist Cat-Rabbit has an amazing collection of plush personalities (not just rabbits). Please check out her website http://www.catrabbit.com.au for more fantastic beings. She also sells her toys …
Rabbits are supposed to eat a lot of hay. It’s good for them and it keeps their weight in check. Tofu goes through phases of hay eating. Most of the time, hay is at the bottom on the list of things he wants to eat. So this is a fairly rare occurrence. He looks particularly like a sea otter in this photo. Don’t you think?
I’ve posted a Monday Bunday wallpaper before at the start of last year. Time for another one! This sweet bunny heart illustration would be great in a nursery. Designer unknown.
In the tradition of Auckland weather, it’s been switching between heavy rain and blue skies like nobody’s business. Here is a picture of Tofu the bunny enjoying the sun. I thought that a green fascinator would be quite dapper and festive. As sunny as it was, the grass was still damp so you can see the tips of his floppy ears are wet through. No doubt his paws were wet too. Tofu doesn’t mind the wet. Is that normal?
Bunny Bar packaging and branding by design company Strohl, makes use of cute doodles and sweet typography to give these snacks an organic, handmade feel. Part of a more refined brand, this product was to appeal to a younger market. Each pet bunny is colour coded to represent each of the different flavours: Mimi Merry Mango Strawberry, Squeaky Cheeky Choco Cherry, DeeDee Dot Cherry Apricot and Rocco Choco Banana. The founder raised 18 pet rabbits as a child, hence the company name: 18 rabbits. I’d buy these.
Tofu the bunny loves strawberry plants and always checks to see if any strawberry leaves or runners have grown down to the height that he can reach. He will wait patiently below the strawberry plants for hours each day. Can you can see the two lower black holes of the planter are empty? That’s because Tofu pulls out the plants he can reach and gobbles them up. I thought I was being so smart putting the planter up high on top of a bucket. Tofu the bunny is smarter than I.
Oops. So I’ve gone and fallen in love with another New Zealand designer that sells to a wealthy overseas market. I am not a wealthy overseas market, but I was on the hunt for a new wallet and a new bag. Sharon Paris started her company about 6 years ago calls herself an artist, but I beg to differ. She may have a BFA from The University of Auckland, but this is fashion design. The products she puts out in design shops all over the world are made from soft Italian leather, double stitched and are fully lined. It is quality stuff, fetching quality prices. The the that makes the brand interesting are it’s quirky phrases. Not what you would expect from high end luxury items. More reminiscent of bathroom graffiti. Sharon was once heard saying, “Whenever they say it can’t be done, remind them they can make a jellybean that tastes exactly like popcorn.” I think it’s a nice insight to her determination and slightly random, surplus-to-needs brand. No one needs popcorn flavoured jellybeans. …
Tofu basking in the sunshine. Again. This time with more style. I vaguely remember seeing a photo of me as a little girl with a pair of these. I’ve wanted heart sunglasses for a long time, so when I saw these adult sized ones in Laos last month, I snapped up a red pair. In hindsight, I should have bought a bunch of these in different colours instead of one pair.
Roby Dwi Antono is a talented illustrator from Indonesia. I feel like I’m looking into the twisted mind of an evil, lagomorph loving genius when I view his work. Roby’s work has been compared to well-know American painter Mark Ryden. Same style, different subject matter. Roby digs bunnies, Mark digs creepy girls. You can view more of his fantastical and macabre artworks at his website Lobilob.
This bunny mirror designed by Audrey Belin for French store Maisonneé would be perfect in a little girl’s room. Or in a big girls room… You can buy it online here.
Tofu wasn’t impressed with our bounty from the weekend. We are super lucky at our rental property to have a macadamia tree. Over the weekend we collected the dropped nuts, husked them and they’ll dry inside for a few weeks before going in a low oven.
This resin collection by San Francisco designer Tina Frey are elegant and whimsical. Lapin is french for rabbit and these dome and pedestals are both classy and rabbity. I love their slightly askew, imperfect shapes. Like they’ve been designed straight from sketches or doodles. The smaller domes would be great as a butter dish and the larger ones for parties. You can view more of Tina’s work over at her website www.tinafreydesigns.com.
I didn’t witness this, but The Koala reported it back to me and I thought Tofu Tuesday fans would enjoy this too. I had planted a thyme plant in a plastic trough and left it on the edge of the deck about 2 feet up from ground level. Tofu the bunny, with terrible sight due to cataracts in both eyes, still has an excellent sense of smell. The very next day he used another, lower pot as a stepping stone to nibble at the overhanging thyme springs. Then he proceeded to pull the whole plant – and the dirt that goes with the plant – out and on top of his head. He continues eating. Unfazed. Hilarity ensues. I wish there was video or photos.
Want. If I had this ring, I would draw a cute bunny face on my finger. Brass bunny ear ring from Old Gold Boutique. Just $38.
It’s not really a Tofu Tuesday without a photo. Since I’m also sick at home today, we’re enjoying the winter sunshine in the yard. Here’s a picture of Tofu just now, about to hop down the stairs after sunbathing with me on the deck. He looks like he’s saying, “Are you coming or not?”.
Scenario Tofu was sick. He was weeing on himself and spending a lot of time in his litterbox which could be due to several reasons. He was smelly and pink underneath and his fur was missing in patches where the urine burned away the fur. It can be uncomfortable and even be painful. Rabbits have sensitive and elastic skin. We trimmed away the really dirty, dreaded bits and gave Tofu daily baths with a medicated shampoo which soothed and helped to clean it up. But all we were doing is washing away a reoccuring symptom, so a week and a bit ago, we took him to the vet. Diagnosis The best diagnosis was a simple infection, treatable with a course of antibiotics. Best case scenario. If the antibiotics didn’t work, we were advised that Tofu may have to go back for x-rays and further tests. Sitting differently while weeing can be a symptom of arthritis (he can no longer sit comfortably in the position required) and the doctor also mentioned the possibility of diabetes. Thankfully, …
I wanted to buy some non-white rice and this bag of Golden Rabbit red rice was calling my name. I am a sucker for food item with a picture of a rabbit on the packaging. Is it the same or cat lovers?
We adopted a rabbit from Laos. The Laos bunny doesn’t speak English, but then again, neither does Tofu. Check out previous Tofu Tuesday posts here.
Lauren Marriott a.k.a. Ralphi is a talented illustrator right here in Auckland. I find it comforting that she has largely etched out a successful illustration career based in bunny drawings. Is there room in the market for 2 bunny illustrators? You can view the Ralphi website here.
