2017 Manifesto

2016 was a game changer. If we are forever rushing along the deluge of life, then 2016 was when I jumped from the safety of the raft to try synchronised swimming. It was scary but it looked cool. This year I grew up a lot and at the risk of sounding like another thirty-something year old woman who has found herself…I’m another thirty-something year old woman who has found herself. I know who I am and feel solid in my shoes. In this life that I have carved out for myself. And it’s been amazing. I am living the dream. Courage In March 2016, not so long after writing last year’s manifesto (or resolutions if you prefer) and after a lot of reflecting, I handed in my notice at my graphic design job of over 10 years to go full time freelance. Now I am a graphic designer, a blogger, a food stylist, a photographer and an illustrator…whenever and whatever the job requires. I’m a multi-faceted creature with many curiosities, talents and passions. As many of us …

A word about rants

I work as a graphic designer and more recently a photographer. I trade service for cash. I might not be in “THE service industry”, but I certainly offer a service. I receive critical feedback from my clients all day, every day. It’s part of the job. Many clients want their projects to look how they want it to look. It’s not about me. “Change the colour, make it more sexy, can we try this font?” “Sure of course we can try that, that’s a great idea, I’ll send a new proof shortly.” I would never attack a client for their feedback on my work. Ever. Not in private, not in public. When Mr Duffy responded, he asked the woman to send through a photo of herself, so he could tell his staff what she looked like. “This will help us very much, making you easily spotted will make it way easier to tell you to f*** off in person…” That’s why I was horrified at how a Wellington burger owner took private constructive feedback and …

“All The Time We Laughing”

The Koala and I are celebrating 6 years of marriage tomorrow. I can’t believe it’s already been a whole year since we went glamping on the West Coast. It was really good to get off the grid for a weekend. More than one wise person has said that you should marry someone who makes you laugh. The Koala has a wicked sense of humour. If jokes and humorous stories (OMG, the STORIES) were currency, we’d be rich! The Koala and I laugh together every day. We have an intricate web of personal jokes that span various languages and time periods. It keeps us tight buddies. When I tell people we’ve been married for almost 6 years, it often surprises them. I guess everyone has ideas of what a marriage is and this changes with each generation or even group of friends. I don’t have many married friends and it seems that my generation prefer to have children or buy houses before getting married. In case you’re wondering, we didn’t marry in a whim either, we were together …

Smart Phone Wunderings

I got my first smart real phone last weekend. I know, I’m a late adopter. You might not know this about me, but I’m resistant to change. What you might already know about me is that I love lists. I could write lists all day. Shopping lists, to do lists (life, work, play), lists of things to eat, places to be, movies to see…there’s nothing more satisfying than dreaming up and crossing off items on my lists. Before last weekend, my hand bag had many scraps of paper with lists scribbled on them. The Koala hated it. He said that I needed to put an entry on each and every one of my lists: “Throw away this list”. Haha.
