Tofu Tuesday: Mint

Each winter, our mint plant dies and then in summer it returns. Mint is supposed to be invasive, so I’m not precious about planting it within Tofu’s reach. It doesn’t matter anyway, he doesn’t help himself. He doesn’t ravage the garden but he loves mint if you pick some and present it to him. Why? He finds individual leaves delicious but the whole patch is too pungent He likes the attention He likes to be “spoon fed” In any case, the mint plants are safe. I put together this garden marker over the weekend. Check out tomorrow’s post for how to DIY your own.

Tofu Tuesday: Tofu’s Grotto

Tofu hangs out in our backyard from morning to night. He has free reign of his little kingdom which includes a decent sized backyard and all of the underside of the house and deck. It gets pretty hot outside in the summer though and he’s pruned and landscaped to his exacting shade and size requirements. Behind our shed, within the bushes, Tofu the bunny has hollowed out a nifty grotto to relax in the heat of the summer afternoon. This is where we will find him on a hot day. This shady green cave has at least 3 entrances and plenty of room for a bunny to stretch out.

Tofu Tuesday: Kitchen Scales

My sister got me this set of kitchen scales for Christmas. Of course, the first thing we weighed was this little dude. Tofu’s diet hasn’t resulted in any weight loss, in fact, at 2.6kg he’s gained 100 grams since he was last weighed. Still, his diet was for better health rather than weight loss so it’s not a complete loss. He hasn’t required a bath since his diet started so that is a very, very good thing. A new year often brings eating related resolutions, but being healthy should always outweigh weight loss. Wishing you all a happy new year and enjoyment of the good life.

Tofu Tuesday: Tofu and the white rabbit

I’ve been meaning to share this white rabbit with you. On my birthday last month, some friends held a fair at their place on Beresford Square. Another friend, Nick Rule, hand sculpts characters and casts them in wax and resin. Naturally, The Koala got a resin rabbit for me for my birthday. The detail is stunning and the pocket watch really works. I keep this bunny on my bedside table. There is a special Christmas fair this Sunday at their place again so if you’re around and looking to shop for Christmas or just to treat yourself to some lovely things, the next fair is promising to be bigger. More info on the fair here.

Tofu Tuesday: Christmas Garnish

Our feijoa tree is in flower and the flowers and leaves look very much like pohutukawa which is considered to be our native Christmas tree. Tofu the bunny loves feijoas and he also loves these leaves and flowers. Getting him to pose for these photos without gobbling them up was no small accomplishment.

Tofu Tuesday: Onitsuka Tigers

In March last year, I blogged about these Onitusuka Tiger rabbbit sneakers by Erik Kriek. They didn’t have them in my size back then and I had already resigned myself to never owning the limited edition kicks. Well last month, thanks to this blog, a lady from the other side of the world contacted me about a brand new pair that also happened to be my size. They arrived last week they fit me perfectly. Tofu gave them his seal of approval.

Tofu Tuesday: Tofu’s Nursery

We recently picked up a new sideboard for the kitchen which meant a bit of rearranging and we bumped a set of white drawers into Tofu’s “room”. With a few items from our bunny collection, Tofu’s room now reminds me of a baby’s nursery. Sloth painting bottom right is by my sister Joanne Ho. Tofu seems to like it. He said it is totally reminiscent of bunny Ikea.

Tofu Tuesday: New Glasses

I got new glasses a few weeks ago. I splurged a little, I don’t regret it one bit. These new specs have bigger lenses and thinner arms meaning that I can see heaps more than before. They’re also very comfortable. I donned my old glasses to snap this photo and was struck by how uncomfortable my previous pair were. Tofu also approves.

Tofu Tuesday: Hay

Rabbits are supposed to eat a lot of hay. It’s good for them and it keeps their weight in check. Tofu goes through phases of hay eating. Most of the time, hay is at the bottom on the list of things he wants to eat. So this is a fairly rare occurrence. He looks particularly like a sea otter in this photo. Don’t you think?

Tofu Tuesday: A Piece of Sunshine

In the tradition of Auckland weather, it’s been switching between heavy rain and blue skies like nobody’s business. Here is a picture of Tofu the bunny enjoying the sun. I thought that a green fascinator would be quite dapper and festive. As sunny as it was, the grass was still damp so you can see the tips of his floppy ears are wet through. No doubt his paws were wet too. Tofu doesn’t mind the wet. Is that normal?

Tofu Tuesday: Tofu ♥ sunglasses

Tofu basking in the sunshine. Again. This time with more style. I vaguely remember seeing a photo of me as a little girl with a pair of these. I’ve wanted heart sunglasses for a long time, so when I saw these adult sized ones in Laos last month, I snapped up a red pair. In hindsight, I should have bought a bunch of these in different colours instead of one pair.

Tofu Tuesday: Tofu vs Thyme

I didn’t witness this, but The Koala reported it back to me and I thought Tofu Tuesday fans would enjoy this too. I had planted a thyme plant in a plastic trough and left it on the edge of the deck about 2 feet up from ground level. Tofu the bunny, with terrible sight due to cataracts in both eyes, still has an excellent sense of smell. The very next day he used another, lower pot as a stepping stone to nibble at the overhanging thyme springs. Then he proceeded to pull the whole plant – and the dirt that goes with the plant – out and on top of his head. He continues eating. Unfazed. Hilarity ensues. I wish there was video or photos.
