Monday Bunday: Snow bunny YDA

This goes out to those in the heart of winter. This poster for the Young Director Award 2008 is quite simple. I’m loving the contrast in size between the boy and the bunny. Sometimes we all take on big projects. It doesn’t look like much until it’s done. 2015 Manifesto

Good morning! Happy New Year! Each year I’ve been writing a list of things I want to more of and less of. I always found checklist resolutions too restrictive, so I prefer this more/less model. A declaration of motives to live by for 2015. I’m am glad to see the end of 2014. It was a year where some shitty things happened: I was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease, Tofu the bunny had 3 surgeries, The Koala was unemployed for a few months which meant we were down to one income, although The Koala quite enjoyed his unemployment. 2015 for me means focus. I’ve worked hard on various projects over the years and now I want to see them through. I’m planning baby steps so that my larger goals are fulfilled. It’s so easy to have goals and not take the steps towards them  until you look up and months or years have passed. I haven’t got any firm plans for this year at this stage. I’d like to travel at some stage. It’s been far too long. What are your New Year’s …

Monday Bunday: Flappie

Flappie the bunny gets a Christmas surprise. A Dutch commercial. The beginning of the video looks grim but it has a happy ending!   From Wiki: Flappie is the name of a Dutch Christmas song written by comedian Youp van ‘t Hek in 1985 The song describes Youp’s remembering Christmas morning of 1961…He looked in his rabbit cage, only to find that his pet rabbit Flappie was missing. He went to his mother to ask for help looking for the rabbit, and his mother told him that he’d have to wait for his father, who was busy in the shed. However, if Youp goes off to play, he’ll get a treat later.  Youp feels incredibly guilty about his pet rabbit – he could have sworn that he locked the gate, and now his thoughts were that his poor rabbit had frozen overnight in the snow. His father eventually comes to help look for Flappie in the woods and by the lake, but there’s no sign of the rabbit. During the meal on that fateful Christmas Day, …

Mr Fancy Cabbage Pants

The Koala enjoys cabbage boiled, I prefer it cooked quickly on high heat. We both eat cabbage either way. Sometimes, I tease The Koala about how white people smell like milk and cabbages. It’s not true. I love milk and cabbages just as much as the next girl, maybe even more than the next girl. We don’t smell like milk and cabbages (unless we’re immune to the smell). Kale was fashionable in a big way, then came brussels sprouts. I think cauliflower tried to knuckle in (particularly with cauli rice and cauli crust pizza) but it’s time for the humble cabbage to make a comeback. Of all the brassicas, cabbage is the most affordable by weight. A dependable, good value vegetable. It’s time to get creative with cabbage. Very Pinteresting I kept seeing grilled cabbages on Pinterest. To be more precise, cabbage wedges with a special dressing. I browse Pinterest quite a lot and grilled cabbage food porn kept popping up as different bloggers posted variations of the recipe. It came with glowing reviews like: “I don’t really like cabbage, but I fixed this recipe …

Fragrances for Foodies

Was duty free shopping an all-ages field trip in your family? As a kid, I spent a lot of time at duty free stores. My uncle worked in duty free and we always had family or friends going to or coming back from Hong Kong. My sister, cousin and I spent hours browsing the displays, snacking on beef jerky or kiwifruit lolly samples, and reviewing all the perfumes. We collected all the paper test strips in our teeny-tiny handbags to enjoy later. We never noted the names of the perfumes and of course, the strips marinaded together in our bags and smelled sickly sweet, but it kept us amused. Gourmand fragrances I have always been always drawn to gourmand fragrances. A gourmand fragrance has notes like candy/fruit, honey, chocolate or vanilla and are also known as foodie fragrances. Gourmand fragrances appeared in the early ‘90s and were descendants of Oriental fragrances which were made with exotic notes from the Middle East and India. There are gourmand fragrances for both women and men. Sugary sweet The …

Monday Bunday: White Rabbit Gallery Christmas Card

Danling Xiao and Sceroz Chan are responsible for this Christmas card for White Rabbit Gallery. I love how they have used blue and red rather than the traditional green and red combo. I particularly like the rabbit having a lie down next to the table. Both The Koala and I like to do this when we’ve eaten a bit too much, although The Koala prefers face down and I prefer face up. Danling is a print designer working out of Sydney, Australia but she has roots in Hong Kong, while Sceroz Chan is based in Hong Kong. Together they are The Flying Room, an online design store full of fun and whimsy. Graphic designing/illustrating Chinese girls that like whimsical stuff? Where do I sign up? You can view this card and more of Danling Xiao’s work over on Cargo Collective here or even more work on her Behance page  here. You can view Sceroz Chan’s work over here on her Behance page.     Click here to see more editions of Monday Bunday.

What’s In My Bag?

A lady’s bag can be a scary place. Most guys I know wouldn’t dare look into a lady’s bag, preferring instead, to pass the bag to it’s owner for her to rummage through if he wants something from it. My bag is a private space. I only let my closest friends poke through my bag and only with prior permission. When I read about the “What’s In My Bag?” bloggers’ colab, my immediate thought was “Oh gawd, what IS in my bag?”. Funny enough, I have owned this bag for just over 24 hours. I haven’t had time to mess it up. What’s In My Bag? Bag Riot bag in red leather from Oh My Bag Entertainment iPad 2 with Yoobao red leather case Wallet Red leather wallet from Citta Design Drawings and Ideas Notebook from Zomato Camera Nikon DLSR Phone Galaxy S4 mini with white flip case Flash drive The Flash 8GB Sunnies Alex Perry Skin emergencies Lucas Paw Paw Ointment Colour Lip and Cheek Stain from The Body Shop It appears that I kinda like the colour red. Fruity Philanderer

Two months ago, The Honesty Box announced they would no longer be offering their home delivery service. The Honesty Box was my jams. We got their small fruit and vege box regularly, but they wanted to focus on their commercial service. Our little run was over. It was a little bit like, “It’s not you, it’s me”.

Our Growing Edge December – Intro, Festivities and Indulgence

It’s the start of December, which means the start of summer and the weather is getting better here in Auckland. Sorry to rub it in for those suffering wintery weather. Sorry. Not sorry. With a new month comes a new edition of Our Growing Edge. This month will be hosted by Christine and Kath from Garden Eats. Christine and Kath are keen organic gardeners and foodies in New York and California. Checking out Christine’s Instagram, it’s hard to imagine she’s starting winter. San Diego is currently at 18°C / 65°F today and Auckland is currently at 16°C / 61°F, it’s warmer there than it is here. Madness! To join us this month, click on the submission button below:   Festivities It’s no secret that December is a time of big spending, festivities and gluttony. I love gluttonous festivities! As of this week, New Zealand has lowered it’s drink driving tolerance. A strategic move. Last week, an average sized dude could drive 5 standard drinks, an averaged sized lady could drink 3.5 standard drinks and then legally get …
