Monday Bunday: Giant Rabbit by ROA

This Giant Rabbit was painted by Belgian street artist Roa on the side of a shop on Hackney Road in London in March 2010. This was painted with the owner’s approval and permission. Yet the council served the owners with a removal order in October, but after a petition and public outcry, the council decided against removing the rabbit. Thank common sense! Councils need to realise that good artwork can beautify an area and can attract people to it. Besides, what gives the council the right to remove artwork on land that doesn’t belong to them? Roa really does get around. This Dead Rabbit by Roa can be found in Williamsburg, New York City. This four story rabbit in Zaragoza, Spain. Maybe the most spectacular, at least technically, would be their lenticular piece on this London garage door. Viewed from the right: Viewed from the left: And viewed from the front: See more of ROA’s urban animals here.

Digidude

I have a tripod at home. In fact, I own 2 tripods. They are retract down to the size of an umbrella but they’re still rather clunky and I have yet to bring a tripod out with me to events, parties etc. Is there any point in owning tripods when you are too embarrassed or lazy don’t use them? The solution? Digidude’s retractable tripod. Perfect for any photo enthusiast who isn’t quite geeky enough to carry around a full sized tripod. Choose from one of four dudes: iChomp, Snot Buster, Pinky Scorsese, BoltBot and G bling Money Son. I can’t choose a favourite, I want them all! $20US each from quirky.com.

Monday Bunday: Valentines Day Special! KidRobot Inspired Wedding cake toppers

When The Koala and I got married a couple of years ago, I was pretty sure we would have bunny cake toppers for our wedding. I looked online a bit but found everything outrageously expensive. Some wedding toppers cost more than my wedding dress! We collect Kidrobot vinyl toys, so in the end, The Koala spraypainted 2 dunny (design + bunny) toys we already owned, I made a tiny veil and we borrowed a tiny top hat from newlyweds Jessica and Todd. They had a dunny toy that came with a top hat. Sadly, in the madness of our wedding cleanup, the top hat was lost forever. Here are some other wedding toppers from around the world that have been inspired by Kidrobot’s toys: Monster dunny wedding toppers by Lunabee. Azteca and Tattoo Series Dunny. Jed and Stacey’s dunny wedding toppers. A couple of labbits at a Coquette Events wedding. Customised Munny wedding cake toppers by Br0wn. Custom painted BUB and ROOZ by Spanish artist WuzOne for Chaffro and Nat_Kitkat’s wedding cake. The next two are commisioned toppers by How …

Fake it ’til you make it

Is it possible to crave something you’ve never had before? I think so. I often read about foods on the internet and then I want them. I want them bad. Lobster rolls are associated with the lobster state of Maine in the U.S. and in New England and the Canadian Maritimes, some McDonald’s offer lobster rolls as a seasonal menu item. They call it the McLobster! We don’t get loster rolls here in New Zealand. I guess it’s because we don’t have lobster here, but we have plenty of things that could substitute. Crayfish would be the most obvious choice. Crab could also work if we were a nation that gobbled up crab. I was craving a lobster roll, but being on a budget – crayfish can be $100kg – I considered making it with surimi instead. At $8kg, surimi is not going to break the bank. Surimi is pretty forgiving too so you can make the mix ahead of time, refrigerate it and eat it over a few days. I’d never do that with fresh seafood though. …

Food tourism

THE PIG ON VACATION As much as Pigs love food they would truly enjoy a culinary experience on vacation. When traveling they tend to dine at the finest restaurants, eat the richest chocolate and drink the most expensive champagne. In addition, their natures to be relaxed and laid back would lead them to an easygoing vacation somewhere on an island or in a resort where they can hang out and be completely taken care of. From the US bridal Guide. Culinary vacation? Me? Really? Naw… I often remark that I would love to eat my way around the world so now I can blame it on my Chinese horoscope. Food tourism is becoming more of a common occurance these days and I think all the food travel shows help boost the industry and make more people yearn to eat exotic things in faraway places. I don’t think of Auckland as being a particularly culinary city, so I was surprised to learn there are a few gourmet food tour companies operating in Auckland. I have no experience …

Pigs: What this year will bring

From Moonslipper.com. The Pig The Pig is an innocent, sweet and lovable personality. They can also be quite melancholy and over-sensitive. The Pig loves the company of others, and adores parties, gossip and chit chat. They are highly intelligent, but prefer to keep this side of their nature under wraps. The Pig does not care that much for money, but is one of the Chinese zodiac signs that is very lucky. Forecast for 2011 The Pig loves to have fun and socialize with family and friends and on this front, the Year of the Rabbit will not disappoint him! He made not have been the life of the party recently, but in 2011 his social network will greatly increase with April, May, July and October being the most enjoyable months. Single Pigs could very well meet a romantic partner through a friend or at a family gathering. The Pig parties hard and works hard and in the Year of the Rabbit he will be bringing in the rewards for all his hard work. For any …

Gong hei faht choy!

Happy Chinese New Year readers! Can you guess what year it is this year in the Chinese lunar calendar? Come on, just one guess?! 2011 is the year of the rabbit! Ahuh! After the hectic year that was the tiger, the year of the rabbit is supposed to bring peace. This is a year where we might self indulge a bit, so keep it in mind (and in check). A bit of self indulgence is good, but not too much or you will become a sick, fat little rabbit. This year trickle by at a leisurely pace. Pursue your hobbies – gentler ones if possible. Gardening, reading, painting, playing music etc. If going on a vacation, make it a relaxing holiday, rather than an adventure holiday. Readers, get ready for a slower pace. Are you ready? I know I am. N.B. Photos of tiger cub and rabbit are from 2006 at the Sanya Greatest World of Love in Sanya, a city in South China’s Hainan where tiger cubs and rabbits became friends. Don’t believe me? Look …

BakerTweet

Last year at the design conference Semi-Permanent, I saw Nicholas Roope speak. Nicholas is from the London advertising agency Poke. Poke resides in a building called Biscuit Building. So it’s no real surprise that they came up with this genius product called BakerTweet. I’m not a Tweeter or a Twitter follower, but BakerTweet in my area would make me rethink this. The geniuses at Poke realised that people often visited bakeries and bought things that were less than fresh. What if loyal customers could know the moment a baked product came out of the oven? That’s where BakerTweet comes in.

Monday Bunday: Rabbit Ears by David Rakowski

I’ve always loved this delightful font Rabbit Ears by David Rakowski. It’s subtle enough to use without clients cottoning on that you’ve inserted a rabbit into their design. David is a music composer and font designer. I think those two skills make for an interesting mix. The lower case letters are pretty cute and unassuming, but it’s the uppercase letters that reveal the rabbit ears. Some info I found on David: “DAVID RAKOWSKI teaches music composition and theory at Columbia University, bites his fingernails, lives in a rural setting, doesn’t have enough facial hair for a real beard, makes the world’s greatest pizza, drinks Thai chili pepper sauces by the spoonful, owns three Macintoshes and a canoe, and is one of Amtrak’s major subsidizers. His music is published by C.F. Peters Corporation, 373 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10016. His wife is named Beth, and his cats are named Poom, Drip, and Bly. He has flown into and out of all three of New York’s major airports, but not usually simultaneously.” You may also have …

Garbage Plate

Now that you have just about recovered from your Christmas period over indulgence, it’s time for me to present to you a gross interesting dish hailing from Rochester, New York. There, Nick Tahou Hots is a restaurant famous for it’s extreme American cuisine. “A plate piled high with fried potatoes, baked beans, hot dogs, onions, mustard, and a chili-like meat sauce.” “A Garbage Plate is a combination of one selection of cheeseburger, hamburger, red hots, white hots,Italian sausage, chicken tender, fish (haddock), fried ham, grilled cheese, or eggs; and two sides of either home fries, French fries, baked beans, or macaroni salad. On top of that are the options of mustard and onions, ketchup, and Nick’s proprietary hot sauce, a greasy sauce with spices and ground beef. It’s served with rolls or Italian toast on the side, fresh from the bakery next door.“ With the large number of college kids in the area, this dish quickly became popular, comforting, filling and (hopefully) cheap way to fill up. Garbage plate is now found all over the Rochester area and these days you get to choose exactly what garbage gets dumped onto your plate. Garbage …
