The Food Show Auckland 2015

If you follow my Instagram account, you’ll probably know that today was the preview day for The Food Show. My sister and I grazed our way through more exhibits than I can count. I’m not sure if we even visited a quarter of what was on offer. The Food Show is HUGE. I could go back every day and find new things to sample. My highlights were: Mahurangi oysters, fat and freshly shucked, 4 for $10. Perfection. Taste magazine 12 month subscription for $29 (includes a free magazine and a wheel spin prize). West Coast Cocoa. Gorgeous stand, delicious samples. Meyer cheese. 4 for $20. A steal. The Pie Piper. Adorable. Delicious. Black Stag Deli’s pendulum BBQ. Cool factor and their Mega Dog was the best. Tips for The Food Show: Avoid the queues and buy your ticket online Bring cash, including coins (parking is $8) Bring an appetite Keep hydrated with a bottle of water Bring a sturdy bag and sensible shoes Leave your jacket in the car (it gets warm inside) Check out the …

Game of Rhones Auckland – a review and a meaty recipe

A couple of Saturdays ago, my friend Miss A and I found ourselves at upstairs at Shed 10 on Queens Wharf. We were dressed in Game of Thrones garb, feeling a bit foolish and ready to taste some good wine at Game of Rhones. Game of Rhones is different to other wine tasting events because of the  unofficial Game of Thrones theme and also the awesome feature being token-free. You don’t have to worry about rationing out your drink tokens, just try whatever you feel like. Each ticket holder also gets a Reidel wine glass to keep. (Just in case you’re wondering, “Reidel” rhymes with “needle”). The only thing you have to pay extra for is food which was priced well for the size and quality. For $50 we got entry, all our wine tastings and a wine glass to keep. A bargain. Game of Rhones has enjoyed sell out events in Australia for a few years but this is the first time Game of Rhones has come to Auckland. There were plenty of dressed up folk from the …

Over 100 wines by 20 producers, it’s going to be a hell of an afternoon. Check out my intro post here. Early Raven tickets were $40 and regular tickets are $50. The ticket price includes all tastings and a wine glass. Food (provided by Bird and Wire) is extra. #Winteriscoming #Wineiscoming

Winter is coming! Winter is coming! If you watch Game of Thrones, this will be a familiar phrase. The Koala and I were quite late to Game of Thrones. We started watching at season 3 and binged on 30 episodes in about 3 weeks. Now that we’re caught up we have to wait week by week like peasants. PEASANTS! A little while ago, my friend Miss A told me about a Game of Thrones-themed wine-tasting event. Called Game of Rhones, it’s on Saturday 4 July at Shed 10 on Queens Wharf. The event has been celebrated in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and for the first time this year, Sydney and Auckland. A celebration of fierce reds from the Rhone Valley in France representing faraway lands. There will also be 20 wine producers from our own land to battle them. Vote for your favourite wine and the winning house will rule the iron throne (or something). Tyrion would approve. Game of Thrones attire is encouraged. If you feel silly dressing up in Game of Thrones gear, just …

Auckland Fair June 2015

This Sunday at Shed 10 on Queens Wharf, New Zealand’s best makers will gather and present their wares. Entry is $5. You can bet that all around the country there are makers working day and night over the next few days to get ready for this huge event. There are over 150 independent makers and to cover the all would be impossible. To keep a list manageable I’ve compiled a little list of makers who may appeal to the foodie in you. Helo Birdie Auckland based artist Joey Ho creates watercolour and gouache paintings, prints and cards. Works feature tiny people, wonderful landscapes, cactus and of course, food. She is probably the coolest little sister in the world. No bias or anything… http://helobirdie.com Helo Birdie on Instagram Miss Changy Artist Ruby White presents a ceramic plates, cups and her signature rooster bowls. I have to admit, I have a girl crush on Miss Changy. She cooks from scratch, she makes furniture and all the ceramics her diners eat out of. Sage advice about social media

#NZbloggers are hosting a weekly blog post challenge. This week’s theme is Sage and you can check out other posts on this theme here.   While I love cooking with some pungent sage leaves, this post isn’t about the herb, but about some wisdom I gained earlier this week. I wasn’t going to write about this, but I shared this event with #NZbloggers and then afterwards, there was so much interest in the event I thought it was a good idea to share what I had learned.   On Monday night (when everyone else was celebrating May the 4th be with you), down at GRID/AKL at Wynyard Quarter a group of men and women (but mostly women) gathered to hear Otis and Sara Frizzell from The Lucky Taco and AUT lecturer Anna Jackson talk, converse and answer questions about social media. As an avid taco devourer and alumni of AUT I felt like this talk was right up my alley. The talk is part of a series run by Women’s Collective. Check out their website and Facebook …

Urbis Design Day – A Round Up

Urbis Design Day has been going for many years now and if you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen some pretty designs on my feed last Saturday. Urbis is about local designers, showrooms and venues pairing up with creatives to make cool, interactive installations. This year’s creatives included street artists, a French patisserie (macarons), a landscape designer, a fashion designer, screen printing, footwear, 3d artist. There was also plenty of coffee, edible treats, and wine. My kind of day. I’ve been attending Urbis Design Day for a while now and in 2009 my girlfriends and family celebrated my hen’s party (bachelorette party) at Urbis Design Day. Urbis took a year off last year and this year they came back with a 2 day event. Friday was just for registered design professionals and Saturday’s version was for public with $30 tickets (or two tickets for $50). This year I tagged along with my sister Joey and her friends. We started just after 10am and finished up after 3pm, although the event didn’t finish until 5pm. In hindsight, I should …

MiNDFOOD CheeseFest 2015 – The skinny

This time last week, I had eaten so much cheese my eyes were glazing over. This time last week, I was at the MiINDFOOD CheeseFest having just grazed my way through most of New Zealand’s best cheeses. I was lucky enough to get a trade/media pass which entitled me (and others) to a full hour of tastings and cheesemaker attention before the general public got in. I caught up with Bri DiMattina, local foodie, and blogger. Bri was the winner of the Curds & Whey Champion Home Crafted Cheese and Cheesemaker Award at last year’s CheeseFest. Being my first CheeseFest I was stoked to be cruising around with someone from the exclusive cheese society. Bri gave me some great festival tips and we rubbed shoulders with important people in the cheese and food industry.   I got to chat to one of the judges, Sonia Cousins, whose credentials include Cheese Activist, Cheese Judge, and Cheese Writer. I learned that like professional wine tasters, cheese tasting judges spit. Spit! It came as bit of a shock but Sonia assured me …

Bloggers love dumplings

Last month, on a glorious Sunday morning, down near La Cigale French Markets in Parnell, a group of bloggers gathered. This was to be my second #brunchclub event and we were here at Sachie’s Kitchen to make and eat dumplings. Sachie Nomura is well known in the NZ foodie circuit for her TV appearances, books and her cooking demonstrations at various events around NZ. She makes Japanese cooking at home easy and accessible. Sachie’s Kitchen offers Asian cuisines including Japanese, Malaysia, Vietnamese, Thai and Indian classes. We were guests of Contiki, a travel company founded in the ’60s by an intrepid and enterprising New Zealander. Contiki focuses on tours for ages 18-35 and their latest itinerary is a 13 day exploration of Japan. What better way to celebrate than with dumplings? Sachie and her team were friendly and put us at ease (while allowing us to get strangely competitive). I loved the team building competitiveness of the class, it was a good way to get to know some new faces. Contiki staff were there to represent …

Splore Food 2015

This time last week, we were elbow deep in Splore. Splore is an extremely well run, three day festival of music and art. This was easily my favourite festival and it was over too quick. I’m a little ashamed to say I only ate 4 meals over 3 days because the food on offer is incredible. I did have plenty to drink…don’t worry, it wasn’t all Jägermeister and cider, I also managed a banana-berry smoothie and a green juice . Here’s a run down on some of the food we ate. Aloisio Brazilian BBQ Halloumi and Free range Harmony chorizo breakfast bun. Brazilian Churrasco. Chicken, beef and Brazilian sausage served with rice, black beans and vinaigrette topped with farofa (seasoned cassava flour). I only had a single meal during Day One and this plate of barbecued goodness from Aloisio kept me going for the whole the day (and night). Most people we saw shared a plate but The Koala and I had one each. No regrets! I loved the help yourself farofa which is a seasoned cassava flour and naturally …

A guide to Splore food

Splore starts tomorrow! Splore is a 3-day music and art astival at Tapapakanga Regional Park on the outskirts of Auckland, New Zealand. Originally held every two years, last year, Splore decided to become an annual event. As Splore also happens to land on The Koala’s birthday, we’ve pretty much got his birthday party sorted for all of time. Splore is now celebrating its 11th festival and this year will be The Koala and my 7th Splore. They have a great sustainable green ethos and the arty atmosphere and beachy location make it unique. You can float in the sea or lie on the beach while watching international and kiwi artists on the main stage. Up on the hills and scattered throughout the site are never seen before artworks to keen you entertained and amused. There are various workshops and markets if you want to broaden your mind or wardrobe. If you like music, art and the beach, this is a winner.  Home The theme this year’s theme is “Home”. Home isn’t a place, it is where …
