2016 Manifesto

I recently read that we should apologise less and give thanks more. For example, if you arrive late for a coffee date with a friend, thank your friend for their patience instead of saying sorry. It gives good energy to your friend and the interaction is one of gratitude instead of apology. I apologise a lot. I have a guilty conscience. This year, I am going to stop saying sorry. I am doing my best. I am enough. Instead of writing New Year’s resolutions, for the past few years, I’ve been compiling a lists of what I want to focus more and less of for the year. My 2015 manifesto can be found here and still holds pretty true in terms of what I want. I admit I hadn’t reviewed the list in the last ten or so months and it’s been a while since I looked at my 2014 manifesto, but I’ve only tweaked the lists a little for 2016. 2015 was a wonderful year… I told the universe I wanted to be a food photographer and food stylist …

Bunny Eats Design turns 5!

5 years ago, I started this blog. It sounds like a long time. But then when I remember that I’ve living in the same house for 6 years, at the same job for 10 years, with The Koala for 13 years, living Auckland for 22 years…5 years doesn’t sound so long. The journey 5 years ago, I had just started to enjoy experimenting in the kitchen and was taking terrible photos of my food. If you dig around, you’ll find my first blog posts. I can laugh about it. My curiosity to try new things and persistence kept this blog going. Since last year, I upgraded my DSLR, I joined brunchclub, I met lots of lovely bloggers, I’ve eaten with lots of food bloggers, I made a media kit (to get more serious and focused), I created a photography portfolio, I started using Instagram, I attended food photography workshops, I took on photography jobs. I started getting invited to food events as media (OMG whut!?), I ate out, I ate out a lot, I’m still here. Courage to …

The Shanghai Chicken Project

The premise I’ve followed the blog Sybaritica for a while and I enjoy John’s experimental and honest love of Asian cuisine. It was there I found out about The Shanghai Chicken Project and his buddy Stefan’s Gourmet Blog. The Shanghai Chicken Project is based on a mysterious chili chicken dish of dubious origin with pine nuts and broccoli leaves. If you have been following my blog for a while, you’ll know I love a good foodie challenge. I also happened to have some premium New Zealand pine nuts and a fermented chili paste I was hoping to play with so it like it was meant to be. The Shanghai Chicken Project rules: Prepare a dish inspired by Bamboo Restaurant’s Shanghai Chicken. It has to include chicken, chiles of some sort, vegetable greens, and nuts. It could be a known recipe or one of your own — traditional or newly invented. Blog about your dish or send Stefan photos and a description of what you did. Lee Kum Kee’s Chili bean sauce (Toban Djan) Toban Djan …

I’m not done yet

“A year from now, you will wish you had started today.” – Karen Lamb For those that have been following this blog for a while, you will know about my seasonal to do lists. Since winter of 2011, every season I have written a to do list of about 10 foodie challenges to push my cooking skills and eating experiences. I am leaps and bounds ahead where I was before I started. I feel confident enough to think “Ok, I can do this” as long as I pay a healthy respect to recipes and the advice I glean from those more experienced than I. It’s been an amazing ride. There’s immense smugness satisfaction in telling people that I’ve made bacon or ice cream or cheese or tomato sauce or a pavlova. I guess gloating rights is part of the accomplishment. If you own a sweet car, you want to show it off right? (That’s a genuine question, I’ve never owned a car) Many of the things that went into my lists were foods that I …

Our Growing Edge – An Intro

Dear Food Bloggers and bloggers who also happen to like food, I would like to introduce to you a concept I’ve been nibbling on for some time. We all have bucket lists. Whether they’re written down somewhere or kept in our heads and hearts. Our Growing Edge is the part of us that is still learning and experimenting. It’s the part that you regularly grow and improve, be it from real passion or a conscious effort. This monthly event aims to connect and inspire us to try new things. Who can join? This blogging event is open to anyone. It is not a competition and there are no prizes or winners, it is just a way  to share new experiences. You do not have to commit every month, only when you have something to share. The host will do a write up and a round up on the first of the following month on their blog. If you would like to host a month, please email me or comment below. Submissions To enter, you must blog about …

Blogspiration (Bunny’s guide to blogging)

About four years ago, a boy I went to primary (elementary) school with, contacted me online. As a designer, a foodie and a better photographer than I could hope to be, we have a few things in common. We’re a breed of people who have to continuously “make stuff” (and eat stuff). We were classmates over 20 years ago and while we have never met as adults, it’s due to his encouragement that I started this blog. I can’t blame it squarely on this encounter, but it wasn’t until that moment I realised that I too, could have a blog. I’ve always kept diaries or written my thoughts online in forums and lengthy emails (just ask my friends). This blog has helped me focus that energy. Blog about something you are passionate about. Otherwise it’s just work. A blog should inspire, inform or entertain. I sincerely hope that this blog does all three. I love the open dialogue with readers and bloggers all over the world. It’s like meeting kindred spirits when you get to …

Food My Friend is my friend

The sweet and talented Cass from the blog FoodmyFriend recently awarded this blog with a Versatile Blogger Award. She lives just over in Sydney, Australia and it’s nice to read her blog because it’s always the correct season for me. She has a lop earred princess called Flatpac and any friend of the lop is a friend of mine. When given this award, bloggers are asked to do three things – link back to the blog that gave them the award, list seven things about themselves and finally, give the award to five others. 7 Things About Me I’ve only ever kept bunnies as pets and have outlived 6 bunnies. When I was a kid I wanted to be an architect. In my last year of high school, I was awarded a scholarship to study anything at a local university. I picked graphic design. I folded 1000 paper cranes for our wedding day. I can’t drive. It takes me 12 minutes to walk to and from work. I’ve visited 10 countries in the last 10 years. …

Bunny Eats Design thanks you for 10,000 Hits!

After over half a year blogging, Bunny Eats Design is close to reaching 10,000 hits. I’d like to thank everyone that has dropped by this blog in the last 7 months. 10,000 kind of snuck up on me this week with 2 high traffic sites featuring some of my posts. I thought I had weeks to go, but it turns out it’s only days away now. It’s all very exciting and I’d like to celebrate with a giveaway just like the giveaway we had when we reached 1,000 hits. To enter, simply share any Bunny Eats Design post or leave a comment on any post between now and Easter. Entries close on Tuesday 26th of April. You can enter as many times as you like and each comment will be counted as an entry as long as you’re not sending through canned, spiced ham. I will draw the winner using a random number generator and the winner will be contacted by email and announced on this blog. Entry is open to everyone. I am busy painting something …
